FAQs & Contact Info

FAQs

1. Will food and/or drink be provided?

Foodand/or drink will not be provided. Please bring water and a snack with you. Avoid coffee and caffeinated drinks as these can negatively affect your blood pressure for the medical assessment.

2. How long will the day take?

The whole assessment process, including the initial greeting and de-briefing, will last approximately five hours.

3. What should I wear to my RAD?

The RAD dress code is smart casual, but you will need to bring gym kit to change into for the physical test.

4. Can I wear glasses or contact lenses for the eye test?

We will test your vision both with and without glasses or contact lenses (if you wear them). We need to test your uncorrected vision, so this means that you will need to remove your contact lenses or glasses. Please remember to bring contact lens solution if you will need to put your lenses back in.

5. I have special requirements which need to be taken into consideration at the RAD – what should I do?

If you have a disability or special requirement and didn’t register as a Guaranteed Interview Scheme (GIS) candidate on application, please contact us as soon as possible.

6. Can I bring my phone or other electronic devices to my RAD?

No recording devices, mobile phones, pagers or any other communication or electronic devices are permitted during the assessment process. If your assessment is in a prison, you will not be allowed to take any electronic devices inside the building. HMPPS does not take any responsibility for the safety of your personal devices.

7. I have a temporary injury so I won’t be able to complete the medical/physical test – what should I do?

Contact us so that we can reschedule your RAD date.

8. When will I find out the results of my RAD?

You will find out the results of your RAD within five working days.

9. What happens if I am unsuccessful at RAD?

If you are unsuccessful at RAD, and would like to reapply to the same prison, you can do so when a new campaign is opened for that prison. Please ask your coordinator on the day for more information. If you would like to apply to be a prison officer at a different prison, you can do so as soon as you like.
