Welcome to HMP/YOI Wormwood Scrubs. We thank you for your interest in becoming a prison officer here.

HMPPS is an excellent employer and if successful you will be embarking on a rewarding, worthwhile and challenging career where no two days are the same.

HMP/YOI Wormwood Scrubs is a male Category B, Victorian local prison, built around 1874. We serve the West London Courts by keeping in custody men aged 18 and over who have been either sentenced or remanded in to custody.

We are a busy London prison with the capacity to hold up to 1279 men in our care. Our population is comprised of men and young offenders with all different natures of offences, cultural backgrounds and sentence lengths and status’.  Our aim is to keep those committed by the courts securely in custody and to help them to lead law abiding and useful lives, both whilst in custody and upon their release.

The layout of Wormwood Scrubs is different to other prisons in that our wings are all aligned North to South, rather than in a radial pattern. This ensures that as the sun rises in the East and sets in the West, each wing (therefore each prisoner) is able to receive some sunlight throughout the day.

Here at HMP/YOI Wormwood Scrubs we are committed to maintaining our already recognised positive prisoner - staff relationships and using this as a platform to encourage men to change their lives and address the causes of their offending behaviour. As a prison officer at HMP/YOI Wormwood Scrubs you should be a role model to the men in our care, and ensure they are treated with dignity and respect, whilst also ensuring prison rules are followed in order to maintain a safe, decent and secure environment for all.

Being a prison officer is an important role on behalf of society and can be both challenging and exciting. We are looking for assertive, passionate and caring individuals, who have excellent people and communication skills, to join our team and promote the rehabilitative culture we aim for here at HMP/YOI Wormwood Scrubs.
