The Role

End User Computing Engineers work on-site, maintaining hardware and fixing technical problems as quickly as possible. They are responsible for managing the lifecycle of all service raised incidents (incident control) and all service requests (request control), requiring the use of knowledge management.  The team consist of a Product and Delivery Manager, Developers, WebOps engineer, Service and Content designers all based in Sheffield. The on site engineer will mainly work at the establishment but their priorities would be set by the team in Sheffield using an agile framework.

You’ll

  • provide first time resolution by troubleshooting and diagnosing or escalating faults (or both) to PFS team to resolve
  • provide effective communication to inform site on progress and advise on workarounds where necessary, as well as the support and maintenance of end user services
  • repair locally based hardware, with a focus on end user devices
  • manage external repairs and stock control
  • work with the PFS team to maintain, update, and test the Windows based server and client platform based onsite
  • Iterate windows client builds and help coordinate to automation and distribution of those builds
  • support user research of new software features and content, and provide feedback on performance and usability
  • work with HMPPS Digital teams to implement new features in a way that works on-site (end-to-end user and staff journeys)
  • liaise with departments in the prison and HMPPS Digital teams to automate and digitise manual prison processes 
  • work with staff mentors and prisoner digital champions to support people with low literacy and low digital literacy in using end user devices
  • work with the prison to identify opportunities to improve the processes required to issue and recover end user devices

Skills and experience

Essential:

  • Change management - Able to implement changes based on requests for change. Applies change control procedures.
  • Incident management - Identifies and registers incidents, gathering the required information and allocating to the appropriate channel.
  • Ownership and initiative - Owns an issue until a new owner has been found or the problem has been mitigated and / or resolved.
  • Problem management - Able to investigate problems in systems, processes and services, with an understanding of the level of a problem (for example, strategic, tactical, operational). Can contribute to the implementation of remedies and preventative measures.
  • Service focus - Takes inputs and establishes coherent frameworks that work.
  • Service reporting - Collates data from depositaries and provides basic reporting.
  • Technical specialism - Assists in technical support activities. Carries out agreed and routine maintenance and administration tasks.
  • Testing - Correctly executes test scripts under supervision. Understands the role of testing and how it works.
  • User focus - Identifies and engages with users or stakeholders to collate user needs evidence and understands and defines research which fits user needs. Able to use quantitative and qualitative data about users to turn user focus into outcomes.
  • Broad technical understanding - Aware of the subject matter and has an understanding of what it involves, especially Microsoft Windows server 2012/16 & Windows 10 as well as Windows active directory, SCCM, and GPO’s. 

Desirable:

  • Asset and configuration management - Maintains secure configuration and accurate information, controlling IT assets in one or more significant areas, and verifying location and state of assets.
  • Continual service improvement - Aware of the importance to consider developing process efficiency and common ways in which processes are optimised. Supports specific activities to improve development processes. Able to spot or identify obvious deficiencies.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services
