The Legal Aid Agency

Corporate Centre

The Corporate Centre helps shape and enable the priorities of the Chief Executive, Executive Leadership Team and People Committee to be delivered.

As a member of our People and Capability Team you will play a key role in supporting us to achieve our strategic objective 3 to become a truly diverse and inclusive employer of choice. The People & Capability Team work closely with our Internal Communications team to support our leaders and deliver our People Plans to ensure the right action is taken so that the LAA is a great place to work, for everyone, every day.

Job Summary

Within the LAA the People and Capability team provides oversight of all people activity including capability, leadership development, diversity and inclusion and engagement. As a team it exists to support the rest of the organisation; managers and colleagues in applying policies, in navigating difficult situations and conversations, enhancing engagement, improving diversity and inclusion, embedding new policies and procedures and providing learning and development to empower every individual to fulfil their potential.

The People & Capability Team oversee implementation and delivery of the LAAs L&D offer, the People Strategy, the annual People Survey and delivery of actions within the People Plan. Our role involves delivery of LAA Strategic Objective 3, contributing to ensuring that the LAA is a great place to work, for everyone, every day.

Senior roles within the People and Capability team involve cross LAA and MOJ working, implementing policy and procedure and engaging with staff at all levels across the business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the implementation and delivery of the People Strategy, including refreshing the Strategy each year and ensuring actions are tracked and reported to the appropriate governance groups.
  • You will oversee the implementation of our annual People Plan, iterating and improving our approach in line with results from the Civil Service People Survey, transformation plans, and staff feedback.
  • Lead on all aspects of people governance. This will include oversight of People and Capability SMT meetings, Risk register, forward look, planning and team days, Public Sector Equality Duty responsibilities and the Race Action Plan.
  • You will support effective governance arrangements to monitor and report progress on our plans, ensuring any risks and appropriate mitigations are identified and that successes are celebrated.
  • Oversee the calendar of updates from the People Team for Executive meetings within LAA, preparing papers and briefings for the Board, Executive Leadership Team, People Committee and People and Engagement Team
  • You will provide advice and support to the Chair and Secretariat of the People Committee, providing progress updates as needed. Where necessary you will write papers and present proposals to our People Committee, Executive Leadership Team or LAA Board
  • You will take ownership of the annual people survey and pulse surveys, establishing reporting structures, promoting participation, analyzing and sharing results and leading on subsequent action planning.
  • Oversee the LAA’s compliance with the Public Sector Equality Duty, including delivering training
  • Work with our BeUnique network to maintain a collaborative relationship and oversee the delivery of Race actions including monitoring and reporting on actions within the Race Action Plan.
  • Lead the monthly People Engagement team meetings which bring together leaders from across the LAA to contribute to delivery of our People Strategy and Plan.
  • Act as relationship manager between Corporate Centre and the Crime Case Management Team, to improve collaboration and joint working between the two directorates. This will involve

Building positive relationships and help promote and maintain a positive image of Corporate Centre including acting as a feedback loop to communicate, listen and act on feedback as well as acting as a single point of contact

  • As part of the People and Capability team SMT you will be required to provide visible leadership to the wider team, leading by example and working across strands to support your fellow band Bs in delivery. You will contribute to ensuring that the People & Capability Team is inclusive, engaging, effective and innovative
  • Create and coordinate opportunities to involve colleagues in the design and implementation of improved ways of working
  • Collaborate with key internal stakeholders to support and lead on a range of employee engagement activities such as workshops or other face to face events
  • Maintain positive relationships with a wide network of key stakeholders in an advisory and collaborative capacity and provide support, advice, challenge and clarification to leaders and managers across the organisation
  • Provide oversight of budget for People & Capability Team activities
  • Line manage member/s of the team where appropriate.
  • Other duties as required to support delivery of SO3 and delivery of the team’s work including providing cover for other Band Bs and or the Head of People and Capability as required.

Annual Leave

Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years’ service.
