HMPPS Psychology Services for Youth Custody Service (YCS) are currently recruiting a trainee forensic psychologist for HMYOI Feltham (A) which accommodates children in custody aged 15 to 18 years.  Mainly working with young men aged 15 to 18 years old although possibility of working with younger boys and girls. Whilst rewarding, young people have complex needs which often manifests as difficult and challenging behaviour in custody. Motivation to work with this specific age group and resilience are therefore essential and previous experience desirable.  Given the geographically dispersed nature of YCS, some travel is required of psychology staff based in specific sites. As a member of the wider HMPPS Psychology Services, there will also be opportunities to work within both the Young Adult and Adult Secure Estates; indeed, Feltham (B) accommodates young male adults aged 18 to 21 and the psychologists there are part of YCS team. Applicants should include a personal statement on the CV stating why they would like and are suited to this post working with children in custody.  Those without a BPS recognised MSc in Forensic Psychology or who are still studying for such should not apply; proof is required prior to interview.

Overview

The job holders within this Group Profile works with prisoners and establishment staff to reduce the risk of re-offending and enhancing the provision of safer custody. This is achieved through conducting research, providing consultancy, delivering training for staff and assessments and interventions for prisoners.

These roles will involve regular contact with be prisoners.

Characteristics

Typical tasks associated with this Group Profile include:

  • All work will be conducted under the supervision of a registered psychologist.
  • Offer advice and assist in target /objective setting for prisoners
  • Offer advice on the location of a prisoner (both within the establishment or potential relocation to another category establishment)
  • Write prisoner reports e.g. indeterminate sentenced prisoner reports, reports for Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) and Parole Board Reviews Raise awareness of the range of interventions available with prison officers and others so that they are better able to recognise who would benefit
  • Interview and select prisoners to assess their suitability for accredited programmes and other interventions
  • Prepare for and co-facilitate (usually more complex) programmes, complete reports and set objectives for prisoners following completion of the programme.   
  • Provide a clinical oversight (treatment management)of identified programmes to ensure standards are maintained and facilitators are supported in group management and related issues
  • Participate in risk assessment of prisoners to determine their risk of harm to self, others and the risk of reoffending. Undertake Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) and self-harm assessments.
  • Conduct relevant research including data gathering
  • Be involved in the development, delivery and evaluation of training
  • Provide consultancy support where required
  • Develop and utilise skills in crisis intervention
  • Present as a 'professional witness' in Parole Board hearings
  • Take responsibility for their own Continued Professional Development (CPD) and maintain progression towards registered status

Working Arrangements & Further Information

Some of MoJ’s, including HMPPS, terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.

Standard working hours for this post are 37 hours per week excluding breaks which are unpaid.

If you are a current NPS employee, this vacancy may be available on a Loan basis for up to 2 years. Applications are invited from suitable qualified staff.

The Loan/Secondment is subject to the approval of the selected candidate's Business Unit, which should be obtained before confirmation of appointment.
