About the Team

The HMCTS Change Directorate is redesigning and rebuilding our Courts and Tribunal services around the needs of our users - ensuring our services are accessible, easy to use, digital where necessary and appropriate, and well supported for all users.

The User Experience team is a cross cutting team which provides the approach, tools and support to the programmes to deliver against our core design principle of being user led in the delivery of transformed HMCTS services. The team work closely with projects to provide best practice and consistent design along with facilitating collaboration across the Directorate.

We are a portfolio function and provide expertise in a range of areas: this could range from designing a new pilot, segmenting and assessing populations to support our accessibility work, through to designing approaches to test interventions to support channel optimisation. Support will range from programme level research/analysis, embedding expertise in projects, consulting/advisory service or support using tools and frameworks developed by the User Experience team.

Roles & Responsibilities

We’re looking for an Interaction Service Designer who is passionate about designing digital services that are simple enough for everyone to use.

You will work in a multi-disciplinary team, alongside researchers and developers, to deliver world-class, user-centred, inclusive services for the public and civil servants.

As an Interaction Service Designer, you’ll determine the best way for users to interact with services, the overall flow and individual design elements. You will mentor and train other designers, supporting the growth and development of the design team.

You will have an understanding of the way the internet works, experience of designing in an agile environment and be driven to help government transform the way it delivers services so that they are simpler, faster and easier to use.

Your main day to day responsibilities will be:

  • Identifying, developing and using best practice and standards to design services consistent with the rest of government and HMCTS
  • Supporting and mentoring designers, providing them with guidance, training and constructive feedback
  • Advocating for users and understanding user needs to design simple, effective and accessible services
  • Creating prototypes and concepts to communicate and test ideas with users and improving with evidence
  • Mapping user journeys and visualising design problems
  • Collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team on large, complex services by facilitating the design process, participating in research activities, workshops and communicating design decisions to the team and stakeholders

Other day to day activities:

You will also be expected to carry out the following day to day activities:

  • Advocating user-centred design and being an active part of the Design community within HMCTS and across government to share ideas, best practice and proactively help and support each other
  • Taking responsibility for your own learning and development and seek opportunities to improve your knowledge and experience

Skills & Experience

Essential Skills

We are looking for candidates with a proven track record in the following:

  • Using your extensive knowledge of visual and interaction design to create usable, accessible and responsive user interfaces
  • Sketching, concept creation and designing prototypes at different levels of fidelity coding interactive prototypes using HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Ability to design digital and non-digital interactions as part of a broad end-to-end service
  • Understanding user needs, participating in research activities and interpreting user research to inform design
  • Ability to analyse the root cause of problems
  • Experience of delivering against tight timescales and demonstrating a proactive approach to managing risks as they emerge
  • Experience of running workshops, leading discussions and facilitating the design of the service through collaboration with other professions
  • Experience of championing a collaborative approach to the design process
  • Experience working in complex change environments
  • Experience with working in an agile environment and with development teams
  • Coaching and mentoring other designers, growing skills, and providing constructive feedback on work
  • Talking about, and advocating for user-centred design to various audiences and stakeholders, in a way that other people understand

Additionally, experience in the following would be highly advantageous:

  • A design related degree
  • Designing in large organisations
  • Experience of designing multi-channel services
  • Experience of working with accessibility needs
  • Coding interactive prototypes using HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Experience of working in the Public Sector
  • Experience of using GDS design styles and patterns

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service.
