Introduction

These are exciting times at MOJ Digital and Technology. We have a clear vision - to develop a digitally-enabled justice system that’s better and simpler for everyone. We’re looking for talented people who are passionate about this mission and ready for the challenge.

You’ll be welcomed into a thriving design community and into multidisciplinary teams, alongside user researchers, product owners, delivery managers and software developers to deliver world-class, user-centred services.

As well as doing great work, we’re creating a place that’s great to work in. We offer brilliant training opportunities, excellent kit and support from expert colleagues. On top of that, you’ll find flexible working, an inclusive culture and a place where your opinion is valued.

The role

Your job will be to design accessible and impactful services and products for the Legal Aid Agency. You could be designing a sophisticated case management system for our caseworking staff or designing tools that help people apply for legal aid.

As a junior designer, you’ll be a part of advancing our approach, helping to grow our design culture, working with other members of the team, and partnering with and inspiring our stakeholders.

Responsibilities

As a Junior Interaction Designer, you will:

  • Work within multi-disciplinary teams to design, prototype and build digital services.
  • Understand user needs and business objectives in a service area.
  • Develop design concepts, user journeys and wireframes that help reimagine how services can be delivered end-to-end, with support from senior designers.
  • Contribute to or co-facilitate design workshops with the team, senior stakeholders and users.
  • Design and test digital prototypes with users.
  • Follow design standards and utilise the pattern library, ensuring patterns and components are consistent, accessible and easy to use.
  • Contribute to our Design Community of Practice.

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate the following skills & experience:

Essential:

  • You understand user-centred design. You know which tools, process or methods to use.
  • You know about agile methodology and the ways you can apply the principles in practice. You know why iteration is important.
  • You can communicate effectively explaining design rationale to members of your team.
  • You create high-quality, compelling design concepts and artefacts such as user journeys, wireframes and hi-fidelity visual design of digital services.
  • You can turn designs into paper and digital prototypes.
  • You can work with developers to understand technical constraints like security, accessibility, version control and hosting.
  • You are a team player.

Desirable:

  • You know what good public services look like and have an awareness of how to design in an inclusive, accessible way.
  • You can design in tools like Figma, Sketch, Illustrator, Invision or similar.
  • You can prototype in code to create dynamic prototypes using HTML, CSS and Javascript.
  • You are interested in designing at scale and in technical environments.
