  1. Overview

We have an (EO) Data Steward Support Officer role in the Community Data Assurance (CDA) team, within the Data & Analysis Directorate. Any merit list from this campaign may be used to fill other similar vacancies.

Role are open to: The post is open on level transfer to existing Civil Servants at EO (or equivalent) and to other eligible Civil Service staff on promotion. Additionally, individuals may apply as external candidates.

We welcome applications from candidates based across the UK. Candidates will have the option of being based in the Leeds or London HQ offices (with flexible working arrangements available) or your nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. These are based at the following JCCs: Cardiff, Leeds, Nottingham, South Tyneside, Brighton, Ipswich and Liverpool, and the following JSOs: Ashford, Beverley, Haverfordwest, Hull, Merthyr Tydfil, Manchester, Newport, Birmingham, Sheffield, North Shields, Bristol, Wolverhampton, Weston-Super-Mare, Stafford, Truro, Winchester and Leeds.

Alternative locations may be available and will be discussed and agreed on the completion of background checks.

Interviews are likely to take place from Mid-March 2024 and will be held via MS Teams. We will keep a merit list for a year for those who successfully pass the interview board but who are not offered a post.

We are a multi-disciplinary team of around 650 staff that sits at the heart of the Ministry of Justice providing analytical support across a diverse and exciting agenda.   1. What you’ll do

We have an exciting opportunity for an EO Data Steward Support Officer to join our team in the MoJ. Data Steward Support Officers play a key role in assuring data managed by probation providers, ensuring that data underpinning services is accurate and can be trusted by all parties.

The post holders will work to a Data Steward (SEO) and support them in ensuring compliance with data quality standards and policies, help deliver data quality initiatives and work with probation providers to execute them. They will develop and maintain effective working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, such as other government departments, probation providers, Probation Service Performance & Quality managers and contract managers, in relation to data management and data delivery in their area.

The successful candidates will undertake different types of data assurance activities and where required provide support and management of improvement processes. The roles will also provide support, training, information and advice to the business.

The post does not have any line management responsibility.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Provide guidance and work with business data owners, analysts, and data governance to create new data standards and modify existing standards as needed.
  • Assist the data steward as the point of contact for stakeholders on queries relating to data assurance.
  • Support training and training materials to enable accurate data entry. Communicate changes to stakeholders to ensure accurate data entry.
  • Ensure the continued and timely testing and flow of weekly, monthly and quarterly performance data via the HMPPS Performance Hub.
  • Working with others, develop and enhance an automated data collection system and oversee the integration and automation of new information returns.
  • Collaborate on the implementation of new performance indicators; working with analysts in HMPPS and MOJ to ensure consistent reporting and to support the development of aligned approaches
  • Support the business in the provision and interpretation of management information; including on matters relating to performance indicators and targets, by providing high quality outputs. Provide support on responses to ad hoc data queries and Parliamentary questions.
  • With others, act as board secretary for various data governance meetings, taking minutes and circulating papers in a timely manner.

5a. Selection Process

There will be an initial sift of applicants through comparing submitted evidence against the behaviour expectations. This usually takes two weeks, depending on the number of applications.

Those who make it through the initial sift will be invited to a Civil Service Success Profile interview. In the Civil Service we use Success Profiles to help us find the right person for the job. We will be using a mixture of methods to assess your abilities, strengths, experience, technical skills and behaviours. We highly recommend learning about Success Profiles and using the Situation, Task, Action, Result and Reflection (STARR) framework when structuring your answers.

The highest scoring candidate that passes the interview will be offered the role. The whole process can take up to a month.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.

For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. MoJ candidates who are on a specialist grade, will be able to retain their grade on lateral transfer.

Annual Leave

Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years’ service.
