The role:

The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) is looking for a strategic-thinking Lead Content Designer.You will work with other leads, improving processes and helping to build delivery teams needed to help create a modern, digitally enabled justice system. You will influence and work strategically with senior civil servants and policy officials to be an advocate of content design best practice. You will take a high level view of how a user’s content journey maps to business processes, for both information and transaction-based services.You will support content designers working within agile teams who are creating and iterating content. You will be able to guide and advise in conversations about the content and its quality throughout a user’s journey, and be comfortable using evidence, data and research to back up your decisions.You will understand how to work in multidisciplinary teams, alongside other digital specialists. You will also be able to work independently and provide content consulting and training services if required.You will be joining an established MOJ content community and be expected to bring knowledge of content and wider digital trends to bear, to manage other content designers, participate in cross-government content activities and educate senior stakeholders about content.

This is not a visual design role.

You will be responsible for:

  • understanding resourcing requirements then recruiting content designers at all levels
  • developing high level content strategies 
  • influencing subject matter experts, stakeholders and senior policy professionals
  • monitoring and improving content based on user feedback, research and data
  • ensuring all HMPPS content assets are user-focused, accurate, accessible, optimised and meet relevant design, style and brand guidelines
  • working with colleagues to understand user behaviours and data patterns to improve how services perform
  • taking an overall perspective on business issues, wider implications and long-term impact, and how content can help solve challenge
  • monitoring, mentoring and developing content team members
  • supporting the head of content and wider content team with reviews, content audits, benchmarking, development and community meetings
  • promoting user-focused content design across the MOJ, its agencies and cross-government group


You'll have

  • proven track record developing content to meet user needs for digital  services
  • experience leading teams of content designers
    strong writing ability for different topics, audience groups, purposes, styles and formats
  • experience developing content strategies or proposing content solutions to solve business challenges
  • confident communicator: able to persuade; negotiate; influence; network; and work with stakeholders
  • knowledge of agile ways of working and user-centred content design
  • excellent presentation skills with experience presenting content propositions and deliverables to business leads and stakeholders
  • up to date with the latest content and wider digital trends, ensuring that our solutions respond accordingly

If successful, the salary we offer you will be within the advertised range and will depend on the skills and experience you demonstrate at the interview.
