About

We are looking for Associate Business Architects to join us in a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the entire HM Courts and Tribunals Service!

The Reform Programme that we are carrying out is redesigning and rebuilding our Courts and Tribunal services around the needs of our users. These reforms include: modernising the court estate and refurbishing buildings to reduce maintenance costs; utilising the latest technology to digitise services where appropriate; speeding up and streamlining working practices; and developing improved services for users, especially vulnerable witnesses and victims.

The HMCTS Business Architecture team is responsible for translating the vision and strategy of the Reform Programme into action and delivery - we do this through the Target Operating Model which sets out our ambition for HMCTS and is the blueprint for the future operation of courts and tribunals. As an Associate Business Architect, you will play a key role in the work of the team to shape the future of HMCTS services. The work we do is built on strong relationships and you will work closely with key stakeholders across HMCTS, the Ministry of Justice and the wider justice system to support the development and delivery of the future service model.

We are looking for applicants to demonstrate that they have the ability required to fulfil this vital function at the core of the Reform Programme, though no previous experience in business architecture is necessary. You will need to have a creative and visual mind, excellent communication skills, an understanding of delivering business change, managing delivery to multiple stakeholders, and the ability to work flexibly to deliver results under pressure. We will provide full training and coaching to support you to apply business architecture skills and tools to the design of new changes to courts and tribunals.

What will you experience?

This is a highly varied and challenging role, offering fantastic training and support, as well as the chance to develop within the Business Architecture profession. Some of your key tasks will include:

  • Support projects to shape their design based on the Target Operating Model including making connections across different parts of the organisation to enable projects to make effective design decisions and manage design risks
  • Lead specific areas of work to resolve design issues within projects or cross-cutting design issues through the Solutions Working Group and support other members of the BA team in resolving complex design issues;
  • Support the BA team to update the Target Operating Model, and its key architecture documents based on major design decisions, and in the development and definition of capabilities required to deliver the future state HMCTS
  • Engage with portfolio and programme managements to ensure business architecture changes are reflected in project and programme delivery plans
  • A 3 Year Fixed Term Appointment with a view to permanency; subject to successful completion of the apprenticeship and the successful completion of any subsequent probation period

What will you learn?

The aim of this position is to prepare you for a Business Architecture career within the Civil Service – as permanent positions come up across HMCTS and the wider Ministry of Justice, we will encourage and support you to apply.

Successful applicants will be enrolled in a Level 4 Digital Apprenticeship in Business Analysis. This is an 18-month course taught through a combination of classroom-based and on-the-job learning that will give you a thorough grounding in Business Analysis & Architecture, as well as a host of valuable qualifications and certifications.

In your first year, you will develop your skills through supporting Business Architects and Lead Business Architects on a variety of projects to gain first-hand experience of working in a large-scale Reform programme. In your second year, you will have the chance to take responsibility as the sole business architect on some projects, whilst still receiving support and development from the wider team.

What are the benefits?

You will have a unique chance to work on issues that really matter, put the user at the heart of Reform, and gain fantastic experience. It’s an excellent base for promotion and a long-term career within the Civil Service.

After your first promotion you could earn between £35k and £45k, while other benefits include the Civil Service pension scheme, professional qualifications, flexible working, season ticket loans, sports and social activities, childcare assistance and more.

What do they say?

“Working at HMCTS as a User Researcher has provided me with a unique opportunity to quickly progress and pick up a range of skills in an extremely short amount of time. I'm not convinced I would have got that elsewhere. The Civil Service is good like that. You are encouraged to use your initiative. Ideas are listened to. You are forced to work quickly and concisely and to justify your thinking. There are opportunities to learn daily.” – Kiran Morjaria (User Researcher)
