User Researcher, Insight and User Research Division

We are redesigning and rebuilding our courts and tribunal services around the needs of our users. These reforms cover: the physical location and environment of courts, telephony based services and a full range of digital services including establishing new virtual case hearings.

The User Research team’s current focus is producing, through primary research, actionable insights that inform – and then validate – the organisation’s user experience design. The team also helps maintain fundamental design principles of being user led, and adopts agile ways of working and continuous improvement in the delivery of transformed HMCTS services and products.

The team is made up of user researchers with a passion for driving the design and development of user experiences that fulfil HMCTS’s goal of being user-focused and evidence driven. Your research will touch on the lives of every type of citizen as well as a range of other users such as legal professionals and judges.

Key Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for developing and overseeing the effective use of user research to inform the delivery of the Change Directorate.

  • Understand and communicate why user-centred design is important and how user research contributes to it
  • Know which techniques are appropriate to generate specific kinds of insights into user behaviour and needs, so that research activities are focused on delivering value to the end user
  • Create data-driven user personas and use them as a tool to support user-centred design decision making
  • Plan out research activities including the schedule of activities, methods, and allocation of resources required
  • Facilitate 1-to-1 sessions and/or focus groups, guide discussions and build rapport
  • Source and procure participants and facilities to conduct user research activities, specifying requirements for user testing groups
  • Communicating user research findings in powerful and persuasive ways
  • Conduct user journey mapping exercises and use them as a tool to support user-centred design decision making
  • Work closely with design teams to incorporate user research findings into the design; so that it maintains focus on user needs
  • Use evidence drawn from data and research analysis to represent the user in product and design discussions
  • Monitor performance and report against plans and taking effective corrective action if required
  • Ensuring that quality control tools and techniques are applied effectively
  • Manage effective engagement with all relevant stakeholders to make sure that, where appropriate, their needs are incorporated

The post holder is required to work in a flexible way and undertake any other duties reasonably requested by line management which are commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post.

Key Requirements:

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • At least 1 year of experience conducting public-facing user research
  • Strong research and analytical skills and the ability to communicate the outcomes clearly
  • Strong understanding of user-centred design principles and tools
  • Experience of using the appropriate research methods to generate specific insights into user behaviour and needs
  • Experience of facilitating and communicating with stakeholders, for example senior management teams and the public
  • Experience of working with suppliers to deliver outcomes to the required quality;

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • 3+ years conducting user experience research is preferred - demonstrated expertise in a relevant field
  • Experience of defining or delivering services for the Digitally Excluded;
  • Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Human Geography or related field
  • Understanding of human-computer interaction and human factors
  • Experience of working on a large project or programme;
  • Experience managing, executing# and analysing usability test sessions or focus group sessions.
  • Experience of working in an agile development environment with User Experience teams, designers and developers to create new digital products and services
  • Experience of introducing new ways of working into an existing team or department;
  • Experience of working with the courts and tribunals service, within the legal community or justice sector.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.
