The JAC

The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) is an independent public body that selects judges in the courts and tribunals, and non-legal tribunal members. The JAC selects judicial candidates through fair and open competition, encouraging a wide range of quality candidates to apply for the posts that it advertises.

The JAC is responsible for designing, planning and running recruitment campaigns to select judicial office holders up to and including the High Court. We have a statutory duty to select solely on merit, while keeping our selection processes open to the widest range of applicants. Role

We take great pride in the work of our small but busy digital team. Being a small public-sector body your work as a developer will have immediate and visible impacts on both the project and on the experiences of operational colleagues. We are currently designing and building a new digital service platform with a Firebase vue.js tech stack.

These roles would suit newly qualified or relatively inexperienced developers looking for a role that includes a clear development commitment combined with the opportunity to make a real difference to the experiences of our users from day one. We will support occasional secondments to other digital employers to broaden your skills set and will help you develop your stakeholder management, digital collaboration and technical skills. We expect junior developers to stay in the JAC for at least 12 months.

We encourage regular remote working and working from home and the team is used to communicating remotely.

As a Junior Developer you will help to develop the digital platform that delivers services to our users, and you will:

  • assist in the planning and development of our digital services platform
  • assist in the development of individual tools and services within our digital services platform
  • work with other disciplines to understand what needs to be built
  • support other digital and operational colleagues
  • iterate and refactor your coding and those of colleagues to continuously improve the digital offering
  • be responsible for the operational stability of the products you build, and ensure the on-going robustness and resilience of those products
  • we include dedicated time for guided self-development in these roles where you will work on projects under the guidance of senior digital colleagues

Duties

In this role you will be:

  • responsible for development activities
  • participate in the definition and analysis of user requirements and recommend improvements to current business solutions
  • develop technical solutions to meet business requirements, ensuring compliance with best practice
  • maintain and support the existing digital platform incident management, problem resolution, and implementation of enhancements to existing solutions
  • ensure the analysis and design of tools and services adhere to appropriate standards and best practices including the policies and guidance of the Government Digital Service
  • ensure existing documentation is up to date at all times
  • work closely with a larger operational team who are the primary internal users of the platform

About the broader DDaT profession

The DDaT Profession consists of people who work in a digital, data or technology specialist role. They design, build and run government digital services. They are responsible for the way we find, access and use data and for the technology infrastructure which support those services. There are currently about 17,000 people working in the Profession. The Profession consists of people working within specialist communities of practice.
