Job title: Functional Skills Tutor

Team/directorate: Learning and Development for HMPPS - MOJ People Group

Grade: HEO

Overview of the role

his is a functional skills tutoring role, focussing on the delivery of training in the subject matter of literacy, numeracy, and oral communication. The role is based within MoJ People Group's Learning and Development Team (L&D).

The job holder will report directly to the Assurance Compliance Lead

The purpose of the role is to provide our learners with the necessary training and skills to obtain their qualifications in functional skills level 2 for English, maths, and oral communication, or a combination according to what qualifications they may already hold.

The delivery of training will primarily be virtual online, using relevant IT such as Microsoft Teams. There will be the occassional requirement to attend learning centres for meetings and other relevant interactions relating to functional skills delivery.

The job holder will be required to deliver Functional Skills Maths, English, and oral communications at Level 2 and develop tailored training / workshops and adopt a more personalised approach for individuals requiring more support.

You will identify learner's strengths and weaknesses through initial assessment diagnostics and support them accordingly, identifying any barriers to learning and plan effective training based on individual learner needs.

You will provide progress feedback to learners and provide support to ensure they meet their set goal / target, ensuring each learner's progression is recorded efficiently using an Individual Learning Plan (ILP).

The job holder will be required to have good interpersonal skills and be able to motivate learners to achieve their best. 

The job holder will be required to provide detailed reports of individual progress, informing the Functional Skills Managers and Head of Function of any concerns relating to delivery of training.

This is a non-operational role with no line management responsibilities

Summary

The job holder will deliver training in functional skills maths, English, and oral communication to level 2.  

The role’s principal areas of responsibility are to: 

•    Deliver online Functional Skills Maths, English and oral communication up to Level 2.

•    Develop tailored training / workshops and adopt a more personalised approach for individuals requiring more support. Also developing additional resources to aid learning and enabling learners to access such resources on their own.

•    Identify learner's strengths and weaknesses through initial assessment diagnostics and support them accordingly.

•    Identify any barriers to learning and plan effective training based on individual learner needs.

•    Provide progress feedback to learners and provide support to ensure they meet their set goal / target.

•    Provide tutorials and one-to-one support for students that have specific learning needs by utilising a range of approaches and teaching techniques

•    Complete and maintain accurate learning agreement records in line with funding agency requirements

•    Ensure each learner's progression is recorded efficiently

The job holder will work alongside the Functional Skills Managers to ensure delivery plans and resources are aligned with current L&D and Stakeholder requirements along with meeting all Ofsted and EFSA guidelines.

Responsibilities, Activities & Duties

he job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties: 

•    Teach, assess, motivate, learners using the latest Department of Education curriculum for functional skills Level 2 to ensure learners achieve their functional skills by the agreed planned end date in the Individual learning plan.

•    Liaise with the Functional Skills Managers to provide updates on learner progress and exam readiness

•    Confidently plan and deliver one to one and group learning sessions, utilising collaborative tools. These sessions must be planned to take into account prior attainment, initial assessment, learning styles and any learning needs the learners have.

•    Ability to adapt sessions, to ensure the best learning experience and attainment for learners

•    Keep accurate records of attendance for all sessions, highlighting any non-attendance to the Functional Skills Managers.

•    Along with the Functional Skills Managers, continually evaluate your learning sessions, using attendance data, learner, employer, and observer feedback to identify improvement.

•    As part of the quality team, continually evaluate all resources and make suggestions to improve the delivery model.

•    Ensure your diary clearly shows all planned activity to allow your IQA to provide remote live support, sampling and carry out observations in line with the quality cycle.

•    Attend all team meetings and standardisation / training days virtually/face-to-face as required. Complete any CPD required/ identified as part of your required role competency in a timely manner.

•    Conduct yourself in a professional manner in line with the MOJ People Group and HMPPS Learning and Developments Code of Conduct and Policy Statements and Procedures

Management and resources – be mindful of how you use resources, always ensuring best value for money and efficient use.
Act as a role model displaying behaviours in accordance with the L&D’s values and behaviours.
Actively encourage and support all colleagues.

Level 3 Teaching qualification (PTLLS/AET or equivalent).

A Level in maths and/or English or above

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.

For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.
