The Office is based over two sites, in Cardiff and Whitehall. Travel between sites and elsewhere may be required in order to build relations with policy colleagues and stakeholders and ensure a unified and effective department.
Overview of Role:
The Policy Team operates across a wide range of reserved and devolved policy areas, working to identify opportunities to benefit Wales within emerging UK Government policy, and acting to identify and resolve issues that affect Wales. The successful candidate will work with and support the Deputy Directors (DDs) and the wider Office to drive forward the Secretary of State’s priorities for Wales. The focus of the role will be to provide administrative and business critical support to enable the smooth functioning of the DDs role and the work of the wider policy team, including correspondence with the public and stakeholders on a number of policy areas.
This role is a brilliant opportunity for someone starting their Civil Service career to gain a real insight into cross-government working and to work closely with officials across Whitehall, as well as with the Welsh Government.
The successful candidates will need to be assertive and confident and have the ability to prioritise a busy workload. Excellent communication and written skills are required and the ability to remain calm and reliable under pressure are also essential.
Business Administration Level 3 – Apprenticeship Description:
As our Apprentice in Business Administration, you will need to quickly establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders both within Whitehall and outside. You will need to work at pace to often challenging deadlines and under pressure, and ensure strict deadlines are adhered to.
Skills and Experience
Your skills and experience should include:
• Excellent written skills
• Excellent IT skills
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work well under pressure and prioritise competing priorities
Written and verbal Welsh language skills are desirable but not essential.
Key responsibilities
In any given week, you could find yourself:
• Providing business critical support to the policy team, such as by arranging and coordinating meetings, capturing formal meeting minutes, managing correspondence and resolving business administration issues where they arise.
• Liaising with internal and external colleagues across Whitehall and occasionally outside of government and acting as the first point of contact for the DDs.
• Analysing and summarising government business across a range of policy areas and developing the capability to provide written and oral briefings to the DDs and other members of the policy team.
• Supporting the policy team and DDs’ obligations to ensure Parliamentary questions, Ministerial briefings and policy commissions are delivered on time and to a high quality.

As a member of the Office of the Secretary of State for Wales, the successful candidate would be an employee of the Ministry of Justice, as we are not an employer in our own right.

Working Arrangements & Further Information
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.
For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.
Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Annual Leave
Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years’ service.

Redeployment Interview Scheme
