Workforce Experience and People Insight Team

The Workforce Experience and People Insight Team, within MoJ People Group, is a dynamic team which provides data-based evidence and insight across business and People Group regarding long-term future workforce trends, medium and short-term workforce plans and the experience and dynamics of our workforce today. These outputs ensure our people plans, policies and processes are data driven and evidence based, employing horizon scanning, expert forecasting, workforce planning, and people analytics using qualitative and quantitative research techniques. This is an exciting time to join a team that works to build confidence in the quality of our evidence base and the capability of our clients’ when using it, and seeks to provide future focused insight that drives improvements in the employment experience MoJ creates for its employees.

We are looking for motivated Data Analysts/Scientists to work in a challenging and exciting environment within the team. We are looking for candidates with a track record of delivering innovative solutions that have a real impact, whilst working collaboratively with others to ensure the right analytical/statistical solution is delivered in an effective and efficient way. You will have the opportunity to further embed an evidence-based approach within the MoJ and influence people and business-related decision making, with a particular focus on recruitment in the Probation Service. The role will include ensuring analytical methods transform findings to insightful actions and in doing so help to ensure the delivery of MoJ business objectives and the Civil Service workforce agenda.  There will also be the opportunity to work in other areas such as leadership, employee engagement, employee wellbeing, retention, talent and development. The roles will make a pivotal contribution and includes providing business critical MI and undertaking predictive analysis. You will lead projects independently and work as part of larger teams consisting of data scientists and analysts.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities will be tailored to reflect your strengths and development needs, but you will contribute to:

  • Working with analytical colleagues, you will bridge the gap between analysis and insights, finding effective ways to explain and visualise findings with context to drive action and deliver business outcomes.
  • Conducting statistical analysis on bespoke questions to provide deeper understanding from experiences across the employee lifecycle.
  • Driving up knowledge and building capability in the team and more widely, employing a range of analytical methods and techniques to enhance the maturity of the analytical findings produced.
  • Building the confidence and capability of HR, business and other users to draw value from analytical outputs.
  • Supporting the delivery of effective practices in partnership with other People Group functions. For example, driving informed recruitment practices by working with the Resourcing function or delivering predictive workforce planning analysis to support business areas achieve the required future workforce.
  • The vision for data science and/or analytics, recommending ways to improve the quality of our outputs and the team’s awareness of the wider data science landscape and emerging technologies.

We’re looking for a highly motivated person who meets the essential criteria:

  • A first or second class degree in mathematics, statistics, behavioural science or another relevant STEM discipline; or equivalent experience.
  • Strong analysis skills, including the ability to derive insight from multiple data sources, use of data to support debate, and problem solve complex challenges.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis
  • Experience of using innovative platforms for data visualisation including R Shiny, Power BI and/or Tableau. techniques and an aptitude for interpreting and disseminating analytical findings.
  • Experience of coding in at least one statistical/mathematical programme (R is preferred).
  • Strong data visualisation skills combined with experience of communicating insights with a range of different stakeholders to influence people and decision making and drive positive action.
  • An adaptable team player, with experience of working collaboratively and confidently with others yet is comfortable using initiative when working alone.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience of working within a People related or HR environment with knowledge of the employee lifecycle and nuances across people behaviour, characteristics and traits.
  • Experience of R programming.
  • Experience of adopting data science techniques to drive insight and decision making.
  • Experience of conducting statistical analysis on people related data to deliver insights.
  • A willingness to work towards achieving professional badging within one of the Government analytical disciplines.

Qualifications
A first- or second-class degree in an analytical, statistical or a social/behavioural science discipline where at least 40% of the grade achieved, was statistical or analytical or equivalent experience.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.

For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service.
