Counselling Psychology Placements at HMYOI Feltham & Werrington
HMYOI Feltham is a Young Offender’s Institution located in Feltham, Middlesex. It is divided into 2 sections; A, housing 15-18 year olds and B housing 18-21 year old young people.
HMYOI Werrington is located in Stoke-on-Trent and houses 118 young people (male).
Recently, a Counselling Psychology Service has been established to provide psychological counselling to young people aged 15-18 years old.
We are now in a position to liaise with your University and offer clinical placements to trainee counselling psychologists as part of the DCounsPsy training.
HMYOIs are a secure setting and offer a rich counselling and organisational experience. It is a placement that will support clinical and professional development as a counselling psychologist. As a new service, it is flexible and there will be many opportunities for trainees to help develop the service by contributing their ideas, learning and observations as well as helping to demonstrate the outstanding benefits and versatility of counselling psychology within a custodial setting.
This will be a challenging, exciting and rewarding placement where trainees can confidently develop their counselling skills and learn the art of working effectively within a large institution and government organisation.
We welcome applications from counselling psychology trainees at various levels of experience; however we do not recommend a forensic setting for trainees to attain their first client work.

Clinical work and supervision
Many of the young people who are serving sentences in HMYOIs will have multiple and complex issues, including significant trauma, bereavement and unresolved anger. The clinical work will often be marked by a lengthy period of engagement to build the therapeutic relationship with the young person in order to start the therapy. In order to also meet the needs of the establishment, you will need some flexibility in the days/times in which sessions can be offered.
Trainees will be expected to have a caseload of between 1-3 young people and to see their clients weekly for between 6-12 sessions. In-house supervision will be provided by an HCPC Registered & Chartered Counselling Psychologist.
The clinical work with young people is dependent on establishing a relationship and until this is done it is not possible to do any therapy work. So taking it slow and using a person-centred approach is essential to ensure that the young person feels in control of where the sessions are heading and understands the goals. Thereafter, a cognitive approach or psycho-dynamic is encouraged but tailored to each young person.

Trainees will need to prove Graduate Basis for Chartered membership (GBC) and have Professional Indemnity Insurance as well as approval from their university placements co-ordinator.

If you are selected for an interview it will take place either at HMYOI Feltham or NOMS (National Offenders Management Services) Headquarters in Westminster.
Successful trainees will need to have enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance and other Prison Service security checks which can be a slow process, involving several weeks. Successful trainees will undertake a brief (2 days) Prison Induction Programme to ensure they know about Prison Service processes and about the teams involved in order to feel confident in the environment.

Working Arrangements & Further Information
Some of MoJ’s, including HMPPS, terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.
Standard working hours for this post are 37 hours per week excluding breaks which are unpaid.
If you are a current NPS employee, this vacancy may be available on a Loan basis for up to 2 years. Applications are invited from suitable qualified staff.

-The holiday year runs from 1 March. If you work a non standard work pattern your leave entitlement may be expressed in either hours or days as appropriate. If you were appointed internally and your leave was previously calculated in days, this will continue to be the case.
