Purpose

To provide a repair, design and development and vehicle conversion service to the Ministry of Justice fleets. Ensuring best practice is employed in vehicle conversion and servicing ensuring that the fleet is legally compliant prior to issue to fleet users, on its return to the facility and after any repair or conversion activity.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to those set out below:

  • Through sound technical knowledge to provide a vehicle service function including the replacement of failed components, those being upgraded or those at the end of life as applicable.
  • The maintenance of a range of vehicle types from small cars to commercial vehicles, including mechanical handling equipment and on vehicle plant and ancillaries
  • Undertake vehicle conversion work to recognised standards and legal constraints on a range of vehicles. Utilising a varied range of technical skills including welding of both ferrous and nonferrous metals, woodworking, electrical installation, CCTV installation and painting
  • Assisting the workshop manager and other technical mangers in the design and development of special vehicles and to participate in research on design changes as needed
  • Undertake diagnostic work on all vehicle types, both mechanical and electrical fault diagnosis, and utilising technical experience to affect repairs.
  • Vehicle inspection to published legal standards for all fleet vehicle types.
  • Fully engage with the Health, Safety and Training Manager, Workshop Management and Transport unit Managers in terms of policy, risk assessment, safe systems’ of work and training.
    Build up and maintain relationships with internal departments and external stakeholders and actively promote a culture of excellent customer service

Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours

  • Must have experience of working in a Commercial vehicle understand the importance of delivering an excellent level of customer service.
  • Must be familiar with all legislation relating to the repair and maintenance of vehicles.
  • Must be able a self-starter and be able to demonstrate a good work ethic
  • Good communication skills and must be able to liaise with staff and stakeholders via phone, e mail and in person.
  • Must be calm under pressure. Make rational repair decisions
  • Must be familiar with diagnostic equipment used in a vehicle repair environment
  • Be technically qualified to a QFC level 2 standard in a vehicle repair discipline
  • Proactively demonstrate adherence to the MoJ policy on diversity and inclusion

Professional Competencies / Requirements

Hold A Category C Driving Licence (preferably C + E and D classes)

Be a Member of a recognised trade professional body (IRTE,SOE, MIMI)

Hold a QCT Level 2 qualification in Commercial Vehicle Automotive Repair discipline

Experienced in working in a commercial vehicle environment, preferable with vehicle conversion exposure

 

Working Arrangements & Further Information

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.
