At the Ministry of Justice, you’ll be welcomed into a large family of interaction, visual and service designers. We work alongside researchers, content designers, product owners, delivery managers and developers to deliver word-class, user-centred services.

As a Senior Interaction Designer, you will be responsible for leading the design of patterns and interactions that meets the needs of the users and government. You will apply user centred design methods to the problems and challenges of our services throughout their life cycle.

You will work along side researchers, product & delivery managers, technical architects, developers and business analysts delivering both digital and non-digital services, ensuring consistency and value exchange between them.

You will also be expected to play an active part the design community both internally and across the government.

Is this role right for you?

As a Senior Interaction Designer you will:

  • Work with the team to capture the entire perspective of your entire service area, set the vision and build a roadmap for the future
  • Understand user needs and track interactions across departmental and organisational boundaries

  • Arrange all interactions into rational user journeys with an awareness how they affect/can be reused across services

  • Create and rapidly iterate digital service prototypes

  • Utilise, iterate and introduce interaction patterns and standards that scale

  • Lead our contribution to the cross government design community – collaborate across other departments

  • Measure recently released product features to establish benchmarks and to identify potential areas of improvement.

  • Make positive contributions to internal community and cross government design meets

  • Welcome constructive criticism and be able to constructively review the work of others

  • Be excited about the future and bring new trends and technology into our services

Skills and experience we’re looking for

The ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Show an active interest in and be up to speed with the latest interaction design trends
  • Have a design related degree and/or 5+ years relevant industry experience

  • Show a strong portfolio of interaction design and prototype output that demonstrates effective user-centred design

  • Demonstrate how they use data and research to influence their design thinking

  • Show how they have validated & iterated prototypes

  • Experience of building & maintaining interaction pattern libraries

  • Strong abilities in design tools like Sketch, Illustrator, Invision, Photoshop or similar

  • Ability to mentor younger interaction designers, contribute to staff training

  • A curios attitude & a creative flair for designing compelling experiences that delight users

Working Arrangements & Further Information


Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.

Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS)
