Job Description

The Unit deals with Reciprocal Enforcement of Maintenance Orders (REMO).

Reciprocal enforcement of maintenance orders (REMO) is a system whereby:

  • maintenance orders, on behalf of UK residents can be established, registered, enforced and modified by courts, or other authorities, in other countries against people resident there; or
  • maintenance orders on behalf of residents of other countries can be established, registered, enforced and modified by courts in the UK

The Lord Chancellor delegates his day to day operational responsibilities as the transmitting and receiving agency, or as a Central Authority, to the REMO unit. This is located in the Office of the Official Solicitor and Public Trustee.

Highly motivated administrative staff with excellent customer service skills are vital to the effective operation of the unit. Most of the staff within MoJ are employed in administrative roles. This is a reciprocal arrangement governed by international conventions, which means that foreign maintenance orders in favour of individuals abroad can likewise be registered and enforced by UK courts against UK residents.

As a case worker you will process incoming and outgoing applications in accordance with the reciprocal arrangement governed by international conventions; receiving and transmitting correspondence and arranging for documents to be scanned and or translated. To chase responses from both the Courts and the foreign authorities, and keep the in house record system updated. In addition, the post holder will be requested to scan daily post.

You will be able to assimilate facts and information quickly, have good written and verbal communication skills as well as effective planning and organisational skills. An enthusiasm for delivering excellent customer service and being a team player are essential for this role.

The team has moved towards an electronic environment, which requires both applications and correspondence being scanned into the on-line Case Management System on a daily basis.

Previous experience of scanning and knowledge of working with Word and Excel systems would be an advantage but not essential as full training will be provided. 

Job Description

Duties include:

  • To process applications; reply to correspondence, arrange for translations where required and undertake case review.
  • Manage own workload and ensure that all work allocated is dealt with within the office Activity Measures and all necessary spreadsheets are accurately and timely updated and that the daily work sheets are accurately completed at the end of each day.
  • To ensure that telephone calls are dealt with in accordance with the office telephone standards.
  • To adhere to the Unit and Office Rotas and the Flexi policy.
  • To assist with the Unit's duties such as scanning the applications and or post and adhere to the scanning guidance for the purposes of handling both applications and correspondence.

The job holder must be able to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English or (when specified in Wales) Welsh.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.

Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS)
