ASSISTANT INSPECTOR POSTS

We are offering these posts on a two year secondment or a two year fixed term contract. If seconded, remuneration (salary and any taxable allowances), pay progression and employment terms & conditions will be the same as currently received from the seconding employer. We can not offer these posts on a permanent basis. We seek competencies often found at broadly the level of senior practitioner, operational manager or equivalent.

HM Inspectorate of Probation is an independent Inspectorate, funded by the Ministry of Justice, and reporting directly to the Secretary of State on the effectiveness of work with adults, children and young people who have offended aimed at reducing reoffending and protecting the public. Our Corporate Plan sets out our work for the next year, as agreed between the Justice Secretary & HM Chief Inspector.

Who are we looking for? We are now recruiting for Assistant Inspectors, and we warmly welcome applications from minority ethnic and/or Welsh speaking candidates. We will offer the best candidate a post from the earliest available date, while other candidates who have successfully passed our rigorous selection process will be placed on a waiting list for any posts that may arise in the next 12 months. The option of part‑time or jobshare contracts can be discussed individually.

All the posts we offer will be conditional upon evidence from references and various statutory checks, including an Enhanced check with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Is this for you? Assistant Inspectors (AIs) play a key role in HMI Probation’s inspections of adult and youth offending work. During inspection visits they examine and assess the quality of practice carried out by front-line staff, against HMI Probation’s published inspection standards.

The inspection programme for AIs is demanding and staff will need to work away from home for up to three weeks out of every four.

To succeed in this role, you will need to have experience of assessing the quality of work being delivered to those who have offended. You will also need strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage with front-line staff and deliver honest and open feedback. Good IT skills are essential for this role.

It is desirable that candidates have a good general understanding of the criminal justice system. You will also need to show that you have the resilience, stamina and attention to detail needed for this job, which involves working away from home most weeks, including lone working.

How do we select? You must complete your application by no later than 23:55 on Monday 28 August 2017. We will invite short listed candidates to an Assessment Centre to be held during the week commencing 25 September 2017. Candidates who are successful at the assessment centre will then be invited to interview. Interviews will be held on 25 & 26 October and 1 & 2 November 2017. You must be available to attend the assessment centre during the week of 25 September and, if successful, one of the interview dates stated above. Working Arrangements & Further Information

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS)

To apply for roles in MOJ you will need to confirm your employment history for at least 3 years prior to the date of application so that pre-employment checks (BPSS) can be undertaken. If you have spent significant time abroad (a total of 6 months in the past 3 years) you would be required to give a reasonable account of the reasons why. 

For some roles you will be required to successfully complete National Security Vetting at Counter Terrorism (CTC), Security Clearance (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV) level as a condition of appointment.
