Job Purpose:

To apply regulations and guidance to assess and authorise applications for legal aid or claims for costs received from suppliers for public funding, to ensure compliance with contract. To include liaison with suppliers and Counsel in relation to outstanding payments on account.

Organisational Context:

The Legal Aid Agency (LAA) looks after Legal aid in England and Wales. The role of a caseworker is to assess applications for legal aid and amendments to application, and to ensure suppliers are complying with the terms of the contract. Caseworkers at this level are expected to understand the regulations and guidelines. Most decision making will be straightforward but they will be required to use their judgement often.

Key Responsibilities

To maintain an up to date understanding of current guidance and regulations. Based on these regulations and some level of judgement undertake the following tasks:

  • Make decisions to approve, reject or refer applications and amendments based on merits and/or means.
  • Make decisions to approve, reject or refer claims for costs.
  • Make decisions to close cases and/or recoup outstanding payments on account.
  • Dealing with client enquires: arranging refunds, ensuring records are up to date and ensuring they receive statements.
  • Liaise with suppliers as appropriate
  • Provide accurate and timely responses to correspondence and telephone calls received from internal and external customers

Working to stringent productivity and quality targets in a variety of work types  

Understand and meet the LAA quality standards for areas of work trained in. Engage in the QC and consistency processes and ensure improvements are made where errors are identified.

Ensure all data is processed accurately, securely and in accordance with LAA data security guidelines

Provide ongoing support, guidance and buddying as required to new colleagues

Contribute to the smooth running of the administration and telephone duties undertaken within the team.

IT literate with good keyboard skills - experience of using word, excel and other windows based applications

Working Arrangements & Further Information

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS)
