Overview
The independent press office for the judges and magistrates is looking for a committed Senior Press Officer (SIO) to add to an enthusiastic and trusted communications team based at the Royal Courts of Justice. This is an exciting time to join the Judicial Office. Our recently-expanded communications team now
includes media, “internal” communications for approximately 25,000 judicial office-holders, and
communications supporting the ambitious HMCTS reform programme.
Job Description
Reporting to a senior the Senior Press Officer will work with two other Senior Press Officer to assist with media relations and other communications activity in the press office for the Lord Chief Justice, heads of division and the Judiciary across England and Wales, including Tribunals Judiciary and Magistrates. He or she will be expected to take special responsibility for particular areas, such as Civil Law or Immigration Tribunals.
He or she be will in direct and frequent contact with judges and with the media and will take part in the out-of-hours duty press officer rota. (These out of hours duties are much less onerous than for a Government press office and a small allowance is paid.)
In post the successful candidate will need to:
- Develop good working relationships with Judicial Office staff, particularly in Private Offices of the Heads of Division.
- Be comfortable working with technology, websites, Twitter and other social media.
- Support senior judges' private offices and the judges at all levels with advice on media handling including statements, rebuttals, preparation for interviews, and preparation of draft responses or statements both pre-empting or reacting to questions.
- Facilitate accurate and timely coverage of courts and tribunals judgments and decisions and publish written versions where appropriate.
- React calmly professionally and promptly to breaking stories generated by judges or court cases during office hours or when on duty, at any time of day or night including week-ends, alerting and consulting senior and other judiciary and officials as appropriate.
- Write accurate, authoritative and literate copy to produce press releases and to assist judges to produce summaries of judgments, articles for internal and external use and information for the website.
- Be comfortable with handling complex information and explaining it in plain but accurate language.
- Be confident speaking to judges of all levels about cases and wider issues.
- Be respected and trusted by journalists.

The Judicial Office
The Judicial Office is a unique branch of the civil service, with around 200 people dedicated to supporting the judiciary in upholding the rule of law, promoting judicial independence, and administering justice impartially, speedily and efficiently. The Judicial Office reports to the Lord Chief Justice (LCJ) and the Senior President of Tribunals (SPT) and helps them fulfil their responsibilities to the judiciary, in an ever-evolving justice system.
The Judicial Office provides a wide range of operational support, policy, legal and handling advice to judges. This includes the senior judiciary and more than 20,000 judicial office-holders. Across diverse functions, the Judicial Office share a strong sense of common purpose: strengthening the rule of law and improving the administration of justice by supporting the leadership and governance of the independent judiciary.

Skills & Qualifications
Required
The successful candidate must:
- Be able to work at times outside regular office hours.
Desirable
- Have at least two years' experience as a Press Officer or working in a media newsroom.
- Experience of working in the field of justice as a press officer, journalist or other role.

Working Arrangements & Further Information
Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Redeployment Interview Scheme
