Overview

The Legal Aid Agency (LAA) looks after legal aid in England and Wales. The role of a Team Manager is to ensure that within all the relevant legal and procedural requirements we have the right people, in the right place, with the right skills and knowledge, to deliver all current and future KPIs, fostering an environment of continuous development both for staff and processes.

Manage and develop a designated workforce to deliver relevant KPI objectives meeting all relevant resource models, guidance and regulations

Job Description

  • Planning of internal resources to ensure all business targets are met, including individual quality, efficiency and productivity targets
  • Collate, analyse and extrapolate statistical data for efficiency, backlogs, holidays, sickness, training etc to provide an accurate reporting mechanism for Crime Case Management
  • Use financial and performance management data to identify key issues and ensure appropriate action is taken to address areas of concern
  • Improve consistency and justifiability of decision making across the business unit on a number of sites
  • Support the internal transformation programme ensuring that teams are aware of proposed changes that affect them and feel supported throughout the process
  • Future resource planning to ensure that staff are developed in line with future business needs
  • Setting direction for the team in relation to the LAA’s aims, objectives, purpose and vision
  • Ensuring that internal processes are fit for purpose and making recommendations for improvement
  • Be aware of risks inherent in internal processes and ensure that these are logged with SMT and appropriate action taken accordingly
  • Ensure that PMRs and 1:1 meetings are held in line with the MOJ PMR process and these are meaningful for both individuals and the LSC
  • Setting SMART targets and objectives for the team and for self to ensure effective performance management can take place
  • Responsible for the effective management of poor performance on the team in line with MOJ guidance
  • Responsible for the effective management of staff absences on the team in line with the Managing Attendance
  • Policy and disciplinary policy Staff Development – coaching and mentoring
  • Managing the recruitment and selection of staff locally
  • Effectively observing and assessing performance, and then giving constructive and honest feedback
  • Encourage, handle and respond to feedback from staff, customers, partners and suppliers to develop and improve services.
  • Effectively plan resources taking a proactive approach to backlog equalisation nationally – reviewing resources and liaising with key stakeholders on work transfers
  • Line management of 15-30 staff in one location
  • No direct budget responsibility. Responsible for ensuring that business unit operates within budget set by budget holder.
  • Responsible for signing off bills up to £100,000

Skills & Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Essential experience of line management in an operational delivery environment. Experience of working towards KPI's .
  • Detailed knowledge of a specific area of processing work within Case Management
  • Awareness of LAA operational processes in a Case Management environment
  • Knowledge of key priorities for organisation and how these relate to and impact on specific business unit and across Case Management as a whole.
  • Experience of risk management within a Case Management environment
  • Awareness of Lean/Continuous Improvement methodology
  • Ability to analyse numerical data
  • IT literacy, particularly Excel
  • Foster effective and productive working relationships with all stakeholders
  • Coaching skills
  • Observe behaviours and give constructive feedback in line with the MOJ Feedback Standards
  • Health & Safety awareness
  • Information assurance awareness

  • Involvement in Wider Management Groups

Working Arrangements & Further Information

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.

Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS)
