Role title: Judicial Appointments Commission - Senior Appointments Manager (SEO)

Job description

The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) is an independent public body, established in 2006, to select judges in the courts and tribunals, and non-legal tribunal members. The JAC is responsible for designing, planning and running recruitment campaigns to select judicial office holders up to and including the High Court. We have a statutory duty to select solely on merit, while keeping our selection processes open to the widest range of applicants. This means continually evaluating and improving our processes to ensure they are fair and open, and that they are identifying the very best candidates for judicial office.

The work is high-profile, varied and challenging. We launch a new campaign for judicial posts every 1 to 2 weeks. These range from high-volume campaigns at entry level, attracting upward of 2000 applicants, to small campaigns for the most senior judicial roles, attracting a handful of highly-qualified people. In a fast-paced environment, you will work with our operational delivery and policy managers to design and plan these campaigns, manage risks and ensure effective delivery.

In this context, we are now looking for a Senior Appointments Manager. Your primary responsibility will be managing the selection exercises for judicial appointments both in Courts and Tribunals at the most senior levels, including the High Court.

You will work closely with the Senior Appointments Lead (Grade 7 equivalent), members of the senior judiciary, the Ministry of Justice, HM Courts & Tribunals Service, the JAC Chairman (Lord Kakkar) and Commissioners and other key interested parties including a cadre of selection panel executives. You will be responsible for the quality of these senior selection exercises, ensuring exercises are planned and delivered in line with Commission policy and to a high standard.

The main responsibilities are to:

  • Manage the selection exercises for the most senior judicial roles;
  • Lead a small team to deliver recommendations for the more senior judicial roles including the High Court, which includes effective risk mitigation and a high standard of candidate handling and budgetary control;
  • Support the selection panel for the more senior judicial posts including for the Lord Chief Justice, Heads of Division, Lords Justices of Appeal, the Senior President of Tribunals and the Senior Presiding Judge;
  • Develop and manage effective working relationships with the Ministry of Justice, senior judiciary and key interested parties such as the legal professional bodies
  • This role is suitable for someone seeking an interesting Senior Executive Officer role with a wide variety of responsibilities.
  • As well as providing evidence of the relevant competencies for this role, the following skills and experience are required:
  • Good relationship management of stakeholders at the most senior levels (equivalent to Director and above within the civil service, Chief Executive and Board Chair in other sectors).
  • Excellent attention to detail in drafting, planning and delivery.
  • A good understanding of how operational delivery, quality assurance, governance and policy are co-dependent functions in a delivery organisation.

In addition to the competencies, these skills will be tested at interview.

Competencies:

  • Leading and Communicating
  • Delivering at pace
  • Making effective decisions
