From supporting victims and creating new offences to protect women from violence, keeping drugs out of prisons and cutting crime, to overhauling sentencing laws – the Ministry of Justice is one of only a handful of government departments that can truly dominate the news agenda.

And our Press Office, bursting with talent, is widely recognised as the gold standard within government for shaping stories and influencing news across print, broadcast and online. With a diverse remit including, prisons and probation, family justice, victims support and modernising the courts system, no day is ever the same in this busy office.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced communications professional to join the Communications and Strategy Planning Team in one of Whitehall’s busiest press offices. Our policies are never far from the headlines, and we want a hard worker with sharp news sense, new ideas and attention to detail to work with private office, policy teams, special advisers, and No.10 to make sure our announcements get the best results.

We want someone who can see the bigger picture, as well as lead on day-to-day planning of departmental announcements. We need someone who can spot opportunities and risks, think strategically, using horizon scanning and insight to effectively sequence announcements and ensure they align to our comms priorities and wider government narrative.

If these challenges sound exciting, you have experience in media relations, communications or journalism, and you enjoy the buzz from working in a busy environment – apply now. You are exactly who we’re looking for.

Key responsibilities:

  • Effectively manage and develop a team that plans and co-ordinates the department’s day-to-day and long-term announcements.
  • Play a key role in longer-term strategic planning, helping to drive horizon scanning work, identifying risks and opportunities for proactive communications. Help to maintain a strategic overview of long-term communications activity.
  • Work closely with the Ministerial regional visits team to ensure we are aligning with announcements and initiatives and getting the best communications opportunities and outcomes.
  • Work closely with ministers, private office and special advisors to negotiate the best slots for announcements and ensure our weekly grids, which keep Ministers and colleagues informed of our upcoming announcements, are maintained to the highest standard.
  • Represent the department at the weekly No.10 planning meeting.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with Ministers, private offices, special advisers, senior officials, stakeholders and OGDs.
  • Work effectively with press office and wider communications colleagues so media handling plans fit with our wider communications strategies.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • You will have a sharp news sense, excellent judgement, and communications skills gained from working in a communications environment.
  • The ability to build effective relationships, influence others and negotiate diplomatically, is essential. You should have the confidence and ability to deal with senior officials, Ministers and special advisers and get them on board with our plans, so we can deliver the best comms results for the department.
  • You will be organised, able to show attention to detail, manage competing demands and deliver under pressure.

You will have the option to contribute to the Press Office out-of-hours service, for which overtime is paid.

We are looking for candidates who have work experience in journalism, in-house press offices or PR and communications agencies.

Salary

The salary range for this post is £45,824 - £50,039 plus generous overtime payments for participation in the out-of-hours rota.
