Scope    This is being opened to all staff in Northern Ireland Office, Home Civil Service and Northern Ireland Civil Service at Grade 6 and Grade 7.

Terms of Appointment

1.    Temporary for 10 months (February 2024).
2.    Available on level transfer for substantive Grade 6 and TRA (Temporary Promotion) for substantive Grade 7.
3.    Discuss with your line manager and gain their agreement before applying. Ideally the successful candidate will need to be available to start immediately.
4.    At the end of the period individuals will return to their current role.

Location    London or Belfast, with regular travel to the other office.

The Role and Purpose

The Northern Ireland Office represents Northern Ireland’s interests at a UK Government level and UK Government interests in Northern Ireland.  We have a wide range of responsibilities, including: underpinning political stability in Northern Ireland; overseeing the Northern Ireland devolution settlement; leading on national security policy in Northern Ireland; addressing the legacy of Northern Ireland’s past; delivering elections and constitutional reform in Northern Ireland; playing a key role in rebalancing the NI economy; representing NI interests, including on the border with Ireland, as the UK exits the EU. 

This is a senior role in our busy communications team, working under the supervision of the deputy director, communications. The postholder will manage all our messaging, ensuring it reaches our audiences in an appropriate and timely manner.

This is a challenging, fast-paced and diverse role which offers substantial scope for learning and development. The post requires flexibility, proactivity, and a willingness and interest to learn new areas of work. Excellent communication skills, confidence working with and learning new digital platforms and a keen news sense are essential requirements.

You will:

●    Direct the department’s proactive and reactive media activity to ensure clear and coherent messaging to our target audiences 
●    Work with policy colleagues to identify priorities and offer first-rate advice
●    Build positive relationships with ministers and their special advisers 
●    Embed digital channels in all media handling
●    Liaise with colleagues across Whitehall to maximise the impact of UKG activity in NI 
●    Oversee the forward planning of the NIO’s news activity  
●    Manage the smooth running of the press office team, including organisation of the out-of-hours roster
●    Join the out-of-hours back-up duty roster with the deputy director, communications
●    Deputise where necessary for the deputy director, communications 
●    Evaluate the impact of NIO activity in achieving the department’s aims

●    A creative thinker with experience of working across a range of channels including digital and social media channels
●    Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and multitask

Experience 

●    Demonstrable experience of working on a departmental news desk
●    Experience of managing a team to deliver outcomes at pace
●    Knowledge of the Northern Ireland political landscape in desirable
●    Active security clearance (SC level) is desirable

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.   

For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks. 

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Annual Leave

Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years’ service.

Security Clearance (SC)
