Overview

The Judicial Office (JO) was established following the Constitutional Reform Act 2005. It is answerable to the Lord Chief Justice and Senior President of Tribunals and also carries out some functions related to the judiciary on behalf of the Lord Chancellor. The JO delivers a wide range of functions for the senior judiciary and to approximately 28,000 judicial office-holders.

Courts and Tribunals Judges, magistrates and lay members of tribunals have the status of office holders rather than employees. The HR landscape is complex, with significant differences between jurisdictions and types of judicial office holders in terms of policies and terms and conditions.

The judicial HR team is not a conventional HR team: the status of the judiciary results in a unique set of challenges – the principles of good HR practice apply but detailed policies are still evolving in many areas. The environment is challenging, and the work involves managing ambiguity as well as operating within a statutory framework for some elements.

This role will involve the job holder working in the Judicial HR Division; Leadership and Delivery team.

The team supports the Lord Chief Justice, the Senior President of the Tribunals and all Judges with leadership and/or management responsibilities on a range of issues.

Job Description

Duties will include:

  • Support the Leadership and Delivery team in planning, managing and delivering all projects.
  • Supporting the Band C on implementation of coaching for leadership judges.
  • Supporting implementation of judicial appraisals.
  • Liaise with colleagues across the Judicial HR team to ensure that HR information on the judicial intranet and e-HR is regularly maintained, updated and available to the judiciary and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain credible relationships with internal and external stakeholders who need to contribute or have an interest in the leadership and delivery team’s work.
  • Provide and maintain leadership charts or visual aids to assist senior judiciary, judicial office.  
  • Provide secretariat cover for an array of meetings and administrative support on various projects as requested.
  • Build, maintain and develop strong relationships with colleagues and stakeholders within the JO, across MoJ and within the judiciary.

The successful candidate will need IT, organisational and analytical skills along with the ability to build and maintain stakeholder relationships.

Skills & Qualifications

It is desirable that applicants have an understanding of the judicial structure, experience of working with the judiciary and using IT to support and manage projects. Training with be provided on the use of Visio for developing charts.

  • Understand and apply technology to achieve efficient and effective Judicial Office business and personal results.
  • Consider and suggest ideas for Continuous Improvement, sharing this feedback with others in a constructive manner.
  • Help Judicial Office colleagues, judiciary and stakeholders to understand changes and why they have been introduced.

  • Be interested and positive about the objectives the team and wider Judicial Office are trying to achieve.

Starting Salary
The starting salary for this post is £25,893 per annum.
