Overview

The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) supports the work of the Public Guardian for England and Wales. The Public Guardian’s responsibilities include registering Lasting Powers of Attorney, supervising the work of attorneys and deputies and protecting people who lack capacity to make decisions for themselves.

We are seeking to recruit Investigators to fill existing vacancies and further vacancies are anticipated to arise over the next 12 months.

Full comprehensive training, consolidation and support will be given for the roles including an overview of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA).

Job Description, Duties and Responsibilities –


Responsibilities may include any of the following:

  • Conduct investigations about the way in which deputies are exercising their powers following concerns raised internally and/or externally;
  • Liaise with deputies and third parties as appropriate to gather the required information and evidence and to achieve outcomes in the best interests of clients lacking mental capacity to make decisions;
  • Undertake safeguarding actions as required throughout the life of the investigation;
  • Complete accurate and thorough reports for the Public Guardian and for the Court of Protection, with clear and justifiable recommendations;
  • Implement the Public Guardian’s recommendations;
  • Implement and respond to directions made by the Court of Protection. This may require attendance at court hearings;
  • Conduct yourself in line with Civil Service Values and expected behaviours;
  • Ensure adherence to OPG policies and guidance;
  • Positively promote and implement diversity and equality of opportunity in all areas of work;
  • Take a zero-tolerance approach when dealing with bullying, harassment, discrimination and victimisation;
  • Participate and promote smarter working and the use of digital tools;
  • Take reasonable care for own health and safety, for the safety of others, and abide by OPG Health and Safety procedure;
  • Continually develop and maintain knowledge of processes;
  • Develop knowledge of Mental Capacity Act and Code of Practice;
  • Be willing to undertake difficult and complex telephone conversations;
  • Gain a full understanding of OPG Safeguarding Adults at Risk Policy;
  • Liaise with colleagues to ensure that work is effectively managed and to foster good working relationships;
  • Participate in evaluating and improving own performance. Take an active part in performance and development reviews, assessing your strengths and areas for development and working with your manager to identify learning opportunities;
  • Carry out tasks as delegated by the team leader and support other areas of OPG such as Court Applications, Supervision and Legal Teams;
  • Look for ways to improve service delivery and work with colleagues and managers to implement improvement;
  • Contribute to and support the aims, objectives and performance of OPG, your business area and your team;
  • Provide advice and support to wider supervision teams;
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the skill set of this post;

Strong leadership is a critical element of this role, as is the ability to prioritise and manage a workload, analyse complex information, present recommendations and make effective decisions.

Starting Salary

The starting salary for this post is £20,755 per annum
