Grade: This role is open to all substantive Band Cs. There may be more than one role available.

Location: The team is based in 102 Petty France, London. Team members are encouraged to work remotely for part of the week.

Background:

The Crown Dependencies Team manages the UK’s relationship with the Crown Dependencies (CDs) (the Bailiwick of Guernsey, which includes the separate jurisdictions of Sark and Alderney; The Bailiwick of Jersey, and the Isle of Man) which are not part of the UK, but are dependencies of the Crown. We do not perform a ‘justice’ function, but work across Government on a wide range of issues, as well as performing specific constitutional functions on behalf of the Crown. We enjoy positive relationships with politicians and officials in the CDs, all of which amounts to a very rewarding job.

Overview:

The Crown Dependencies Team fulfils a core constitutional function of the Lord Chancellor. As a member of the team you will be one of the first points of contact in the UK Government for all 5 Islands. You will exercise your excellent interpersonal skills to build relationships with other UK Government Departments and make sure the CDs’ interests are represented across Whitehall. You will use your remarkable good judgement and influencing skills to facilitate discussions, and to broker solutions to what can be complex issues. The role will involve some policy work, including briefing Ministers and senior officials, and representing the CDs’ interests within Whitehall. You will work with, and be able to command the confidence of, CD Chief Ministers, Heads of Civil Service, Lieutenant-Governors (HM Queen’s representative in each CD), Bailiffs (Heads of Judiciary) and other senior stakeholders in each jurisdiction. You will meet regularly with MoJ Ministers and may need to accompany them to events with senior CD politicians and Civil Servants. You may also be asked to represent the team and the department alongside more senior officials at meetings and events, offering valuable opportunities for personal development and networking. You may also have contact with Buckingham Palace and there could be opportunity for travel. You can read more about the Crown Dependencies and the role of the MoJ in the factsheet via the following link: Crown Dependencies Factsheet

Collaborating and Partnering:

  • Creates and maintains positive, professional and trusting working relationships with a wide range of colleagues and stakeholders to help get business done; to broker pragmatic solutions to problems.
  • Works collaboratively, sharing information and building supportive, responsive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, whilst having the confidence to challenge assumptions.

Delivering at Pace:

  • Focuses on agreed planned goals and activities, dealing with challenges in a responsive and constructive way to deliver timely and quality outcomes; and takes responsibility and accountability for their delivery.
  • Responds quickly to changing and emerging priorities in an innovative and creative manner, co-ordinating with colleagues and stakeholders as necessary to ensure issues are fully explored and understood to enable the delivery of effective and timely outcomes.
  • Demonstrates excellent judgement, both in prioritising issues, and in knowing when to escalate an issue, or to seek input from senior colleagues or professionals.

Seeing the Big Picture:

  • Is alert to emerging issues or trends which might impact or benefit own and team’s work, (including, in the Crown Dependencies Team, issues in both the UK and CDs’ media and Parliaments as well as issues in the UK which might impact the CDs or the constitutional relationship between the CDs and the UK; and in the EU Exit Legislation and Strategy Team, issues raised by the central Departments.)
  • Retains a focus on the longer term and wider context of the work whilst not losing sight of day-to-day issues.
  • Actively seeks out and shares experience to develop understanding and knowledge of own work and of the team across Government; and brings together views and perspectives of stakeholders to gain a wider picture of the landscape surrounding of current and developing issues.

Changing and Improving:
