Job Title: Business Manager, Prison Reform Policy Directorate Justice Analysis & Offender Policy Group

Grade: Band C / HEO – available on level transfer or promotion.

Location: London or Leeds.

Background

The Prison Reform Policy Directorate works closely with HM Prisons and Probation Service (HMPPS) to deliver the Government’s aim of a prison and probation service that reforms offenders. The directorate has over 100 staff and a budget of £7.7m.

This is a great opportunity to take on a post with real accountability and responsibility. The business manager plays a key role in supporting the director and her senior team in managing the directorate’s work and resources to deliver ministerial priorities. The post is ideal for a self-starter who has a head for numbers, an eye for detail and can turn their hand to a wide range of corporate matters. You will work closely with senior civil servants and gain an excellent insight into prison reform policy.

Key Tasks:

You will:

  • Manage the director’s workflow to ensure urgent action is commissioned appropriately and key information is cascaded to the right people at the right time.
  • Support the director’s Senior Management Team meetings, drawing up agendas that are well-structured and address priorities so that meetings are productive and relevant for all attendees.
  • Maintain accurate records of the directorate’s finances and headcount and advise the senior team on spend and financial risks.
  • Ensure the directorate complies with MoJ’s corporate requirements by collecting relevant data, compiling records and completing corporate returns.
  • Line manage four PAs, providing supervision and supporting their development.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.
