This is an exciting opportunity to undertake a key role in a fascinating, sensitive and often high profile area of the Ministry of Justice’s portfolio.

The Coroners, Burials, Cremations and Inquiries Policy Team is a busy and often fast paced environment. Much of the work is reactive, dealing with short-notice requests for briefing on high-profile cases and policy issues that receive media coverage, as well as a significant number of PQs, and considerable statutory casework on behalf of the Secretary of State/Lord Chancellor. Coroner, burial, cremation, and inquiries law and policy can be very technical areas, and it is the team’s role to offer accurate and informed advice to Ministers and stakeholders.

The post combines leading on some policy areas and supporting others, and line management responsibilities when required.

Key task

Policy project work

  • Assisting senior colleagues with policy development and taking forward specific policy initiatives/projects as required including:
  • Drafting and proofing project documents including leading on correspondence, such as responses to the Home Affairs Committee;
  • Contributing to proposals for solving policy issues;
  • Acting as the main contact for OGDs;
  • Arranging, participating in and recording stakeholder meetings;  
  • Applying project management techniques to the planning and monitoring of progress and delivery

Ongoing policy work

  • Acting as the main point of contact on other key policy areas on coroner, burial, cremation and inquiry issues
  • Providing written and oral briefing for Ministers and senior officials
  • Drafting PQ responses and replies to Freedom of Information requests as well as clearing lines for MCs, TOs and other correspondence; dealing with telephone queries

Leadership and line management

  • Providing support to the casework team as necessary, ensuring they are clear about what is required and are kept informed of key developments (which may include direct line management of Band D staff)
  • Quality assuring work, ensuring deadlines are met and management information systems are kept updated
  • Undertaking appraisal/performance responsibilities and providing appropriate development opportunities as appropriate

Working Arrangements & Further Information

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.
