Job description

The Ministry of Justice is recruiting for two Higher Executive Officers to join the newly formed Priority Projects team (PPT). The team is one element of the departments strategy function, working flexibly across a umber urgent and priority work strands in the Policy, Communications and Analysis Group

The nature of the work requires members of the team to be adaptable, changing projects regularly and holding responsibility for project delivery. As an example of the breadth of work, the PPT has been playing a central role on a number of urgent and/or priority work strands, which includes preparatory work for the spending review, the departments approach to court fees and prison reform. Each role is incredibly varied, with members of the team imbedding in policy teams for up to six months.

This role requires an adaptable team player, who is driven to continuously improve and is comfortable working flexibly. You will be required to work through challenging policy problems, breaking down key issues and presenting your outcomes in a clear digestible way. This will require work with senior stakeholders across the Ministry of Justice, as well as Other Government departments, and will involve engagement with the ministerial team.

You will be expected to play a multifaceted role, supporting the delivery of a number of cross-cutting projects and products. To do this you will need to develop strong working relationships across the department, command the confidence of stakeholders and operational colleagues, and be able to absorb complex policy briefs with pace and ease, working to fixed delivery targets with significant accountability for outputs.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the delivery of numerous projects in priority areas of the department – the specific work area will be based on a monthly allocations process but may include: Prisons policy, EU Exit, Enforcement and legal aid.
  • Keeping abreast of Departmental priorities and external developments to inform our strategic approach to different projects.
  • Take an active role in fulfilling the team’s corporate responsibilities, including opportunities to lead activities relating to staff engagement, diversity and inclusion, learning and development, knowledge management, and communications.
  • Working collaboratively with policy sponsors, analytical, legal and operational colleagues to develop robust and evidence-based policy options to agreed time and quality standards, ensuring links are made to other relevant policy and operational teams.
  • Establishing strong collaborative relationships with key stakeholders from across the MoJ and wider government to quickly understand complex areas of policy and develop suitable solutions/recommendations.
  • Play a proactive role is engaging senior members of the priority projects team and senior stakeholders on the progress and performance to the relevant senior strategy adviser and head of unit.
  • Lead or support policy colleagues on engagement with the Ministerial team.
