The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) priorities include improving public safety and reducing reoffending by reforming prisons, probation and youth justice, and building a justice system which makes access to justice swifter and more certain for all citizens whatever their background. Project professionals in the MoJ help to improve the government’s ability to protect the public and reduce reoffending, and to provide a more effective, transparent and responsive criminal justice system for victims and the public. As Project Support you will be central to the delivery of the Secretary of State’s priorities.

The MoJ is centralising its Project Delivery Profession into a central team managed by the Project Delivery Function. Successful candidates will join the Professional Delivery Group and be placed on Projects for set periods of time, upon completion of the placement you will return to the central team for your next assignment. This will provide you with an opportunity to contribute to a number of projects across the MoJ which will support your development and provide you with opportunities to progress your career with the MoJ.

This role will provide you with an interesting and supported introduction to Project Management. As Project Support, you will be responsible for a diverse range of activities to support the delivery of the project's objectives. You will help to support the smooth running of the project by assisting the project manager through the operation of project management processes, and the co-ordination of business management actions and activities on their behalf. You will be expected to support the project manager with activities such as communication between with the business, maintenance of central project records and production of regular management reports. Successful candidates are expected to commit to the role for a minimum of 18 months.

Key responsibilities of the role

  • Planning and scheduling – Assist with and maintain appropriate systems to enable effective planning and scheduling.
  • Monitoring and reporting – Assist in maintaining project controls and in producing project reports.
  • Admin – Responsible for project file management using robust version control. Organise key project meetings, and provide secretariat support.
  • Resources – Management of staff as appropriate, including their development.
  • Stakeholder – Assist with maintaining the stakeholder log for internal and external stakeholders. Act as the focal point for project responses to external requests for information.
  • Financial control – Assist with the monitor of project spend and contribute to the compilation of budgets. Maintains an accurate asset register for the project.
  • Risks and Issues – Assist with and maintain risk and issue logs, escalating as appropriate.
  • Experience of organising teams, establishing processes and working to deadlines.  
  • Able to use Microsoft Office tools.

This is a permanent position with frequent weekly travel to other sites.

Salary & Grade

Band D- EO

New entrants to the Civil Service will be expected to join on the minimum of the pay range.

Existing Civil Servants will have their salary calculated in accordance with the Department’s pay on transfer / pay on promotion rules.

Selection and Recruitment Process

Where high volumes of applications are received the initial sift will be completed against the lead competency. If your application progresses to a full sift, all competencies will then be considered. Feedback is not available for those not invited to interview.

Merit List of successful candidates based on location will be retained after this campaign for 12 months.

Successful candidates will then be invited for interview and the interviews will take place virtually via Skype for Business, until current guidance for COVID 19 restrictions change.

The interview will consist of Project Delivery competency and strength based questions in line with success profiles.

                                                            Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post.
