Overview

The Ministry of Justice sits at the heart of public service delivery and the government’s wider social reform agenda, working to protect and advance the principles of justice. The department has been at the forefront of the Government’s wider efficiency agenda making a finance roles an exciting and challenging opportunity.

The Ministry’s functional leadership model for finance brings together specialists into a single, unified team across the Department with the vision of putting finance at the heart of decision making. The Finance Business Partnering (FBP) teams supports budget holders across the department, assisting them in delivering their financial management responsibilities, ensuring corporate controls and processes are followed and supporting the business areas to have confidence in their financial position and to drive efficiency.

FBP teams work alongside the businesses they support, and have a close understanding of their business to enable them to help drive better outcomes from ensuring that finance is at the heart of decision making. The FBP role is to protect value, drive value and add value to the business.

Role Purpose

This role is responsible for managing the financial business partnering relationship with MoJ’s Digital and Technology directorate. This includes overseeing large Digital and Technology change programmes and interfacing with numerous stakeholders across the organisation. 

The successful candidate will use significant leadership, management, representational and influencing skills both within the organisation and with external stakeholders. This role has a major impact on supporting the achievement of MoJ objectives and is integral to the development of Digital and Technology’s business and organisational strategies.

The successful candidate will have overall accountability for their work area, operating with considerable freedom. Management guidance is likely to be infrequent and the post holder is expected to work autonomously. They will typically deal with high profile, often complex or contentious issues which have many dimensions across their business area and organisation wide.  This may involve solving poorly defined issues without precedent or where potential outcomes are unclear.  The role will use creative thinking to develop new approaches in solving problems.

All Senior Finance Business Partners are expected to contribute to the broader objectives of the finance function, seeking to work collaboratively with colleagues across the group.

Responsibilities

You will combine financial expertise and experience with a deep understanding of finance functions and the wider government context. In addition to leading and developing your team, you will provide expert financial support and advice to multidisciplinary projects, senior colleagues, and stakeholders both within and outside of Digital and Technology. You will show a consistent commitment to delivering value for money in all areas and may often work closely with other functions and external bodies. You may take a technical lead in complex areas such as developing and implementing financial controls, business planning, production of accounts and risk management. You will have well-developed networks and may have worked in other Civil Service or external environments where you will have gained additional commercial and strategic skills.

The Selection Process

Should a large number of applications be received, an initial sift may be conducted using the lead behaviour, Leadership. Candidates who pass the initial sift may be progressed to a full sift or progressed straight to interview.

Qualifications
A full accountancy qualification

Interviews expected from wc 5 July.  We will try to meet the dates set out in the advert but there may be occasions when these will change. You will be provided with sufficient notice of the confirmed dates.

Interviews will be conducted via a Microsoft Teams video call, details of which will be provided to you should you be selected for interview.

Feedback will not be provided at the initial sift stage but will be given following interviews.

This role is being advertised on a national basis. We have hub locations across the UK and will work with the successful candidate to identify a suitable location on appointment. As a team we are based Uk wide and it should be noted that the successful applicant must be willing to travel as required. Noting at present we are following government guidance and working from home.

Salary will be subject to location of the successful candidate.

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service.
