We encourage applications from people from all backgrounds and aim to have a workforce that represents the wider society that we serve. We pride ourselves on being an employer of choice. We champion diversity, inclusion and wellbeing and aim to create a workplace where everyone feels valued and a sense of belonging. Overview of the role:

The Ministry of Justice is a major government department at the heart of the justice system. We deliver some of the most fundamental public services including courts, tribunals, prisons, legal services, youth justice, probation services, and attendance centres.

The organisation works together with other government departments and agencies to bring the principles of justice to life for everyone in society. From our civil courts, tribunals and family law hearings, to criminal justice, prison and probation services. We work to ensure that sentences are served, and offenders are encouraged to turn their lives around and become law-abiding citizens. We believe the principles of justice are pivotal and we are steadfast in our shared commitment to uphold them.

Our vision is to deliver a world-class justice system that works for everyone in society.

Our 4 strategic priorities to deliver our vision are:

  • A prison and probation service that reforms offenders.
  • A modern courts and justice system.
  • A Global Britain that promotes the rule of law.
  • A transformed department that is simpler, smarter and more unified.

For more information on who we are and what we do, please visit: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/ministry-of-justice.

The People Group within the Ministry of Justice

The people who work for the Ministry of Justice are responsible for its success; and the role of the Ministry of Justice People Group is to support the organisation by enabling our people to be the best that they can be.

We operate as a cluster of HR services working seamlessly to provide expert support, advice and delivery throughout the employee lifecycle. From the time people join the organisation, to the point at which they leave, we strive to make a positive contribution to their work experience. We want everyone who works for the Ministry of Justice to feel confident in their skills, ambitious for the future and fulfilled by their work and relationships with their colleagues.

Each service area is led by a Divisional Director/Head of Service who is responsible for managing a team of HR professionals. Programmes of work are agreed annually and delivered collaboratively as part of the People Group Business Plan.

These positions sit within the HRBP MoJ Headquarters function. HRBPs are a primary route into People Group and the commissioning of people services for business areas. They work in partnership with Centres of Expertise and Operations to enable the employee lifecycle.

Working within a HQ team led by the Divisional Director (MoJ HQ HR Business Partnering and SCS Team) you will work within a team that ensures our people are at the heart of everything we do.

As a HR Business Partner in MoJ HQ, you will be responsible for forging productive relationships with relevant senior leadership teams, enabling translation of business priorities and strategy into a coherent people agenda with targeted interventions.

Working alongside a Director to support Directors and their Senior Leadership Team to design and deliver tailored HR interventions to drive improvements in effective leadership, people management, organisational design and development, change management and workforce strategy.

Post holders will work closely with colleagues across People Group to provide business insight to improve HR processes, systems and the service provided to business areas. They will address medium and longer-term challenges by working closely with MOJ's People Group's Expert Centres and HR colleagues across MoJ and its agencies, as well as the wider Civil Service professions.

Key to this role is the need to be a credible HR professional with the ability to establish quality relationships. While the HRBP is the primary contact for senior stakeholders, their success is reliant upon the strength and support of the rest of the People Group function via Shared Services and Expert Services, as such the individual will need to be able to deliver through others.

In summary the post holder will:

  • Working closely with Directors and Senior Leadership Team on strategic workforce planning to establish existing and future workforce numbers, skills requirements and organisation structures;
  • Providing support and advice on resourcing vacancies, ensuring compliance with Civil Service Commissioner Principles;
  • Advising- on and delivering talent management - supporting building capability through implementing talent reviews, supporting performance validation and advising on capability plans for the business;
  • Supporting Directors and Senior Leadership Teams to identify and plan employee engagement interventions, using Civil Service People Survey data, that will drive increased capability and performance;
  • Engaging Directors and Senior Leadership Teams to ensure people issues and risks are considered at the appropriate time;
  • Supporting the implementation of changes by proactively planning and advising on effective change management.
