Who are we?

The YJB is the public body which advises Ministers, including the Secretary of State for Justice on the youth justice system. Our ambition is to see a Child First youth justice system. A system which looks to children’s’ strengths and supports children to become the best version of themselves. To this effect we engage with a wide variety of organisations, partners and parties with an interest in youth justice, we share good practice, champion improvement and issue grants.

Job Description

Summary

This is a key role in the supporting the delivery of the Youth Justice Board’s statutory functions and strategic objectives.  Using your initiative and problem-solving skills you will be expected to take a pro-active approach in developing innovative solutions to resolve complex issues.

Working closely and collaboratively with the regional heads of innovation and engagement, to achieve organisational and team objectives.

Using your skills and strengths in successful stakeholder engagement, you will be analysing and interpreting complex information from a variety of sources. Working to identify and share evidence-based effective practice,  your work will contribute towards reducing disproportionate number of ethnic minority children in the youth justice system. An understanding of the youth justice system in England and Wales will be essential to your work, which will contribute to reducing re-offending, improving resettlement, advising on the reduction of serious youth violence, advising on improvements in the way the sector operates and working towards a Child First approach in the youth justice system.

All posts within the YJB operate flexibly to ensure the requirements of the business are met and as such the post holder may be required to undertake other duties in their role or duties in other parts of the business at their grade to meet business priorities.  Post holders will expect to work within a matrix management approach often undertaking regular tasks alongside providing project support to wider programmes, they will be expected to take on corporate responsibilities in addition to their role specific task.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Proactively engage with youth justice stakeholders with a focus on both performance improvement and youth justice practice to support the delivery of effective outcomes for children and the collation, dissemination and promoting of evidence-based good practice in the youth justice sector, including its workforce development.
  2. Enable and facilitate briefings and forums for internal and external stakeholders with the aim of promoting evidence-based good practice in the youth justice sector and, in partnership with the sector, brokering performance improvement
  3. Seeking innovative ways to identify, promote and facilitate the sharing of evidence based good practice including undertaking performance related assessments and audits.
  4. Research, analyse and evaluate the effects of proposals, changes, innovations etc. and prepare written papers, submissions and reports for senior staff, ministers or other stakeholders.
  5. Contribute to the YJB’s oversight of the youth justice sector through collating, analysing and interpreting complex information, stakeholder engagement, writing reports and providing evidence-based feedback and intelligence
  6. Contribute to the youth justice resource hub, developing and promoting evidence-based practice tools and materials such as self-assessments materials and toolkits, evaluation and oversight
  7. Working collaboratively to support the delivery of YJB’s aims, statutory functions and strategic priorities

Who are we?

The YJB is a non-departmental public body (NDPB) established by the Crime and Disorder Act (1998) and accredited by Civil Service Commission. The YJB is the only official body to have oversight of the whole youth justice system and so is uniquely placed to guide and advise on the provision of youth justice services. Our primary function is to monitor the operation of the youth justice system and the provision of youth justice services.  It has a legal duty to advise the Secretary of State on matters relating to the youth justice system, to identify and share examples of good practice and to publish information about the system: reporting on how it is operating and how the statutory aim of the system (to prevent offending by children) can best be achieved.

YJB staff are public servants rather than civil servants but, following accreditation by the Civil Service Commission we can accept applications from across Civil Service Departments, their agencies, NDPBs and ALBs as internal applicants.

The national salary range is £36,498 - £40,297, London salary range is £40,228 - £44,538. Your salary will be dependent on your base location

Annual Leave

Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years’ service.

There is also a scheme to allow qualifying staff to buy or sell up to three days leave each year. Additional paid time off for public holidays and 1 privilege day. Leave for part-time and job share posts will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.
