The YJB is the public body which advises Ministers, including the Secretary of State for Justice on the youth justice system. Our ambition is to see a Child First youth justice system. A system which looks to children’s’ strengths and supports children to become the best version of themselves. Summary

YJB is the only public body with oversight of the whole youth justice system. Research and evidence are key to our understanding of the youth justice landscape. This supports effective decision making, gives assurance to ministers that our advice has a solid evidence base and supports the achievement of our strategic objectives.

The Business Intelligence and Insights Directorate gathers and interprets information from a range of sources (including data, research, and wider intelligence). This information supports: the YJB’s oversight of the Youth Justice System (YJS), helps us to understand how the system is operating and whether it is achieving its aims, and helps to identify future opportunities and challenges for children and the YJS. The directorate leads the organisation in gathering, developing and using data and evidence well.

Job Description

As part of the Information & Analysis team you will be responsible for updating existing reporting and dashboards, the generation of new reports to meet organisation needs and delivery of ad hoc reports and analysis.

You will support the building of all standardised reporting to ensure automation of frequently run reports. You will be working in collaboration to understand reporting needs and how effective analysis can be supported. You will have accountability for delivering current defined reports within agreed timeframes and required quality.We need intellectually curious team members with coding experience who have a proven record in the practical application of statistical analysis. Applicants should have good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate complex data/analysis to non-specialist colleagues and stakeholders.

You will:

  • Develop and maintain analytical models.
  • Build an understanding of the range and quality of data sources in relevant portfolio, evaluating, and advising on appropriate use of data sources.
  • Analysing and communicating trends and key areas or issues from the data.
  • Assist with the development and continual review and improvement of statistical outputs and processes, to meet the needs of internal and external users in an efficient and effective way and assessing future demand. This includes considering best use of digital technology in analysis and presentation in line with the strategy for the UK statistical system (Statistics for the public good – UK Statistics Authority)
  • Promote statistical best practice, ensuring compliance with the Code of Practice for Statistics and related legislation.
  • Support the SEOs and G7 in the development of the Information and Analysis Team.
  • Build collaborative and productive relationships across the YJB and wider.
  • Proactive in self-development to learn and apply cutting edge statistical techniques.

All posts within the YJB operate flexibly to ensure the requirements of the business are met and as such you may be required to undertake other duties in their role or duties in other parts of the business at their grade to meet business priorities. You will expect to work within a matrix management approach often undertaking regular tasks alongside providing project support to wider programmes; you will be expected to take on corporate responsibilities in addition to your role.

Main Responsibilities

  • Carry out data analysis, quality assurance, and produce graphical representations and data visualisations to present and communicate trends and key areas or issues from data.  
  • Assist with the production of statistical outputs, including consulting with users and ensuring compliance with Office for Statistics Regulation requirements and that outputs/analysis are fit for purpose.
  • Assist the development, continual review and improvement of statistical outputs and processes, to meet the needs of internal and external users in an efficient and effective way and assessing future demand. This includes considering best use of digital technology in analysis and presentation in line with the strategy for the UK statistical system (Statistics for the Public Good).
  • Responsible for highly effective oral and written communications, including reports and submissions, using appropriate styles, methods and timing to translate complex data into clear and concise information for a wide range of audiences to maximise impact and understanding
  • Build and manage collaborative relationships with stakeholders in the youth justice system to gather and share requirements and findings.

Essential skills

  • Coding experience (able to manipulate and filter data) - preferably confident in R but other languages (eg SQL) will be considered if candidate can demonstrate an aptitude to code
  • Experience and knowledge of both Power BI Desktop and Tableau to build/update dashboards, reports and datasets.
  • Proven analytical experience, including a track record in the practical application of analysis with an in-depth knowledge of data sources and resolving any anomalies with data suppliers.
  • Ability to deliver analysis outputs to tight deadlines contributing to statistical production.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex analysis to non-specialists.

Desirable skills

  • Experience of modelling data/regression analyses/Bayesian analyses
  • Experience of working with large datasets
