Job title: G7 – Head of International Campaigns – maternity cover (12 months)

Vacancy Description:

The Ministry of Justice is looking for a dynamic and creative communications professional to lead the development and delivery of our high-profile, first class international campaign for a one-year maternity cover.

The successful applicant will lead campaigns for the international portfolio, focussed on our flagship “GREAT Legal Services” campaign, which is under the banner of the cross-Government GREAT campaign. You will join and oversee an ambitious team of three, promoting the UK’s legal offer overseas and win business for our law firms, chambers and courts, as part of the MOJ’s international strategy. Your role will involve the strategic development and implementation of this campaign, critically assessing insight to develop engaging content and impactful international events, which will encourage international audiences to choose the UK for their legal advice. You will be confident engaging with audiences across the globe and the UK legal sector, working with policy colleagues at MoJ, colleagues at the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) and Department for International Trade (DIT), building close working relationships with embassies around the world, and in designing and delivering major first-class events at home and overseas or virtually.

You will also be part of the wider strategic communications and campaigns team, with potential opportunity to develop and deliver additional campaigns as required. You will be flexible in your approach and quick to respond to new priorities. This is a unique opportunity to work on an international and domestic portfolio, communicating top government priorities to a wide range of audiences from senior lawyers to international businesses and stakeholders.

Have you got strong experience of leading campaigns, both paid-for and no-cost, to deliver a high return on investment? Do you have a strong track record of establishing insight to set stretching objectives, and meeting them? Are you as confident setting the strategic direction for a campaign, as you are in delivering it through high impact events and engagement at home and abroad? If so, you could be the perfect candidate for this role.

The job is based in the Strategic Communications and Campaigns team (part of the Communications Directorate). You will work alongside an existing Band A (G7) who leads domestic policy campaigns for the prison and probation and victims policy area, and be part of a wider team including insight & evaluation, digital, external affairs and strategic communications. You will report into the Deputy Head of Strategic Communications and Campaigns. Your role will involve working with policy and communications colleagues, Ministers, private offices and Special Advisors to define communications objectives, understand audiences, create content for external channels and evaluate the impact and success of communications activity.

Key responsibilities

  • Developing, leading and implementing the GREAT Legal Services campaign strategy aimed at overseas legal buying audiences – encouraging them to choose the UK for their legal advice.
  • Using the OASIS strategic approach (Objectives, Audience Insight, Strategy/Ideas, Implementation, Scoring/Evaluation) to implement and evaluate the campaign.
  • Creating compelling content, activity and events that increase positive perceptions of the UK’s legal offer and propensity to buy UK legal services.
  • Delivering a first-class customer journey to take audiences from awareness to understanding to action (converting leads into business wins).
  • Leading the ‘GREAT Legal Services’ Campaigns Team - comprising two Band Bs (SIOs) and one Band C (IO).
  • Working collaboratively with policy and communications colleagues, Ministers, private offices, Special Advisors, Other Government Departments, British Embassies, and the legal sector to further campaign goals.
  • Advising on and developing strategic communications approaches, including creating new campaigns, across new and existing MOJ priorities as required.

Person Specification

  • Passionate and energetic campaigner with a proven track-record of delivering successful, integrated marketing campaigns, preferably with experience of delivering events and communications internationally.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and deliver at pace.
  • Confident communicator and excellent relationship-builder who can work with ministers and influence senior leaders, stakeholders and building alliances to support campaign delivery.
  • First-class strategist, able to see the bigger picture, think long-term, and align campaign goals to the department’s objectives
  • A motivational leader with strong line-management skills and an ability to develop a talented team.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
