This position is available for external applicants as well as existing civil servants on level transfer or promotion. New recruits to the Civil Service joining MoJ are expected to join at the band minimum. Secondments and loans will be considered on an individual basis. This appointment will be made on a fixed term appointment, due to the time limited nature of the Reform Programme. For existing civil servants, whilst the role itself is time limited, successful appointment on promotion will secure this grade on a substantive basis.

Background:

It is an extremely exciting time here at HM Courts and Tribunals Service. We have been undertaking a change programme aimed at delivering pioneering judicial services that better serve the public.

As part of the Strategy and Change Directorate, you will be at the forefront of facilitating and implementing change in our world-leading justice system. As services are reformed, you’ll be part of their transition into Digital and Technology Services, supporting service owners to continuously improve our services based on research, insight and best practice. It’s an exciting opportunity to influence ways of working from a design perspective.

This Programme is one of the largest across Government and you will gain a deep understanding of how a large complex portfolio operates as well as develop a broad range of effective business skills. Your development will be supported throughout with coaching and mentoring from senior professionals across the Directorate, and you also can attain relevant professional qualifications/certifications. 

About You:

Putting the user at the heart of your design process, you’ll have the technical knowledge and experience to create, test and iterate prototype digital services, from simple wireframes through to hi-fidelity code prototypes. 

Key Responsibilities:

As an interaction designer, you’ll be part of the user-centred design team and HMCTS’ growing design community of practice. You’ll be working on new and improved courts and tribunals services that anyone can use to get access to the justice they need.

You’ll be expected to:
•    work in an agile, multidisciplinary team to develop design concepts at pace within complex, fast-moving transformation programmes
•    work out the best way to let users interact with your service across different channels, devices, browsers, and technologies
•    champion accessibility and inclusion, making sure that designs meet accessibility, legal and security requirements
•    actively participate in user research to identify user needs and test different design ideas 
•    talk about the evidence, data and research that underpins your design decisions and demonstrate your service to communities, stakeholders and at service assessments
•    work within and support the government service design manual and government service standards
•    support, coach, mentor and train other designers, helping set and communicate best practice 
•    play an active role in HMCTS’ growing design community of practice as well as wider cross-government communities of practice
•    provide management support for up to 2 HEO interaction designers, focusing on their development needs and the quality of their work and behaviours

The post holder is required to work in a flexible way and undertake any other duties reasonably requested by line management which are commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post.

Essential Skills & Criteria:

You will be able to evidence a track record of:
•    Working with user researchers to identify and meet user needs. Explaining the difference between user needs and the desires of the user. 
•    Balancing user needs and business requirements to develop design solutions.
•    Using a variety of prototyping methods to test your design ideas. Experience prototyping in code.
•    Understanding the importance of assisted digital and designing accessible and inclusive services.
•    Effectively managing stakeholder expectations. Supporting or hosting difficult discussions within the team or with diverse senior stakeholders.
•    Being an active member of a community, actively networking with others, contributing to ways of working and community activities such as design critiques

Desirable Skills & Criteria

•    Experience of working in large digital transformation programmes in government
•    Experience of UK government service standard assessments, either taking services for assessments or assessing services against the standard

Location of Posts:

The successful candidate will be required to travel to London, however base location can be flexible. Travel to other HMCTS sites may also be required as part of these working arrangements. In line with the department’s policies, travel and subsistence and, where appropriate, overnight accommodation will be available in line with organisational policies.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances.
