Overview
The Ministry of Justice sits at the heart of public service delivery and the government’s wider social reform agenda, working to protect and advance the principles of justice. The department has been at the forefront of the Government’s wider efficiency agenda making finance roles an exciting and challenging opportunity.
The Ministry’s Financial Management and Control directorate brings together multiple teams from across the Ministry into consolidated teams and centres of excellence to deliver high quality financial management and reporting services for the Ministry.
The Financial Accounting and Capital Accounting teams support the department by providing a centralised, professional service that supports the entire department and individual business areas and entities, whilst adhering to the key principles in Managing Public Money, the Estimates Manual, Consolidated Budgeting Guidance, the Spending Controls Framework and Budget Holder Responsibilities.
The Capital Team are concerned with departmental and agency assets such as buildings and digital technology and leases.
Role Summary
Financial Accounting and Reporting EOs are expected to support the team in producing accounts and estimates by collating evidence and information, performing reconciliations and ensuring data inputs and transfers to systems are actioned. They will liaise with other colleagues to collect and analyse relevant information.

Role Responsibilities/Tasks
- Collating standard evidence for accounts, Estimates and audit requirements
- Performing monthly balance sheet reconciliations, presenting information clearly and ensuring issues are escalated
- Maintaining asset registers, reviewing asset event forms to action updates to assets
- Performing month end closure activities
- Inputting data into systems, running reports and extracting financial information
- Performing variance analysis to support financial accounts and Estimates
- Maintaining finance guidance
- Maintaining chart of accounts
Other duties
The post holder will be required to work in a flexible way and undertake any other duties reasonably requested by line management which are commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post.
Corporate Finance has the objective to develop a more flexible team. As a result all team members at all grades will be expected to work flexibly and assist in other areas as and when required.
Whilst experience of both management and financial accounting is not required, a willingness to learn and develop skills within both areas is.

Travel
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.
You are advised to access the JCC/JSO office map, which is updated whenever a new JCC/JSO site opens, to determine potential travelling times and distances to MoJ locations before applying for a job.
The successful candidate will be appointed to either one of the locations specified in the advert or, if nearer to their home, an alternative MoJ office location in the region which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed upon completion of pre-employment checks.

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years’ service.
