Judicial and Legal Services Policy Directorate

The Judicial and Legal Services Policy Directorate is recruiting permanently for a Grade 7 Head of Director’s Office. This campaign is being run externally and so is open to all who consider themselves suitable for the role and meet the eligibility criteria in the wider advert within Civil Service Jobs.

Location:

Successful candidates will have the option to be based at one of the following locations:

  1. 102 Petty France, London
  2. 5 Wellington Place, Leeds

Occasional travel between the two locations may be required.

In order for Policy Group to meet its evolving business needs all Policy Group staff are expected to attend their base location (102 Petty France or 5 Wellington Place Leeds) at least 3 days a week.  This hybrid working arrangement is not contractual and as a result staff could be asked to attend their base location more frequently.

The Work of Judicial and Legal Services Policy (JLSP) Directorate

JLSP is an integral part of MoJ’s Policy Group. We are responsible for supporting the Lord Chancellor to fulfil his responsibilities in respect of the judiciary, and for the department’s sponsorship of the legal services sector.

Head of JLSP Director’s Office - the role

The Head of the Director’s Office is a busy and varied role, focussing on delivering the Director’s corporate priorities and overseeing business management of the Directorate.

This role is being advertised during an exciting period of change for JLSP as a new permanent Director is being recruited.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the role in accordance with the new Director’s priorities, whilst also overseeing the existing high-performing Directorate Support Team and working closely in support of the Director currently in post. 

You will have direct line management responsibility for at least one staff member, and overarching responsibility for the wider Directorate Support Team.  The shape of the team will be finalised when the new Director is in place but will include a business manager and a team of personal assistants.

You will work closely with the Director and Senior Management Team to understand corporate priorities and ensure cross-Directorate issues such as performance management and the People Survey are well managed and communicated.

The role will suit an individual with capacity to manage a large breadth of work.  You will have a significant level or autonomy and responsibility.

Main responsibilities

  • Providing strategic support to the Director and wider SMT, including:
    • Supporting the senior leadership team to identify strategic issues that mater to the Directorate and developing the corporate agenda for the SMT
    • Taking action to ensure that these issues are progressed.
  • Managing the Directorate Support Team with responsibility for:
    • Delivery of business and administrative support within the Directorate,
    • Ensuring effective onboarding of new joiners; business continuity planning; information management and financial monitoring.
  • Leading on corporate priorities and project for the directorate, for example:
    • Analysis and response to the annual People Survey
    • Supporting SMT to take forward programmes of work such as staff engagement.
    • Leading on the Directorate’s Rewards & Recognition workstream

Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • A drive to get things done, and to lead new areas with enthusiasm.
  • Strong organisational skills, capable of managing and delivering a high volume of work at pace whilst ensuring quality.
  • The ability to develop and nurture effective relationships with colleagues, including at SCS level, to ensure effective collaboration to get business done.
  • Have excellent judgement to identify and manage risk.
  • Previous line management and leadership experience.

Desirable:

  • Experience of leading a business support/corporate management/private office team.

Annex A - The STAR method

Using the STAR method can help you give examples of relevant experience that you have. It allows you to set the scene, show what you did, and how you did it, and explain the overall outcome.

Situation - Describe the situation you found yourself in. You must describe a specific event or situation. Be sure to give enough detail for the job holder to understand.

  • Where are you?
  • Who was there with you?
  • What had happened?

Task - The job holder will want to understand what you tried to achieve from the situation you found yourself in.

  • What was the task that you had to complete and why?
  • What did you have to achieve?

Actions - What did you do? The job holder will be looking for information on what you did, how you did it and why. Keep the focus on you. What specific steps did you take and what was your contribution? Remember to include how you did it, and the behaviours you used. Try to use “I” rather than “we” to explain your actions that lead to the result. Be careful not to take credit for something that you did not do.

Results - Don’t be shy about taking credit for your behaviour. Quote specific facts and figures. Explain how the outcome benefitted the organisation or your area. Make the outcomes easily understandable.

  • What results did the actions produce?
  • What did you achieve through your actions and did you meet your goals?
  • Was it a successful outcome? If not, what did you learn from the experience?

Keep the situation and task parts brief. Concentrate on the action and the result. If the result was not entirely successful describe what you learned from this and what you would do differently next time. Make sure you focus on your strengths.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.

For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post.
