The Judicial Office

“Strengthening the rule of law and improving the administration of justice by supporting the leadership and governance of our independent judiciary.”

Judicial Office is an arm’s length body of the Ministry of Justice. We are a unique branch of the civil service, dedicated to supporting the judiciary and promoting judicial independence, to maintain confidence in the rule of law. We help the Lord Chief Justice and the Senior President of Tribunals fulfil their responsibilities to the judiciary, in an ever-evolving justice system. We provide operational support, policy, legal and handling advice through a number of specialist teams.

The Judicial Office is looking for a data protection expert to drive forward and embed work required to ensure that the Judicial Office and the judiciary are compliant with the new data protection legislation coming into force on 25th May 2018. This is a new role in the Judicial Office and the post-holder will be the judiciary’s lead official on data protection. The successful candidate will be based at the Royal Courts of Justice, London and report to the Head of Corporate Services.

This is a demanding role working at all levels in the Judicial Office and interfacing with the Ministry of Justice and the Information Commissioners Office. It is an interesting and challenging role that will offer the right candidate opportunities to support [work closely with] the senior judiciary and the Judicial Office Management Board in securing effective compliance with the GDPR.

The Judicial Office Data Privacy Officer (DPrO) will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of data protection policy, monitoring Judicial Office compliance with data protection law, and developing related policies and guidelines where applicable.

The DPrO is the lead point of expertise on data protection issues for Judicial Office staff and the JOMB and is responsible for ensuring Judicial Office compliance with the GDPR.

Responsibilities include:

  • ensuring the Judicial Office is provided with appropriate data protection training, awareness and guidance;
  • monitoring Judicial Office compliance with data protection law;
  • auditing Judicial Office data processing records;
  • providing advice and recommendations to the JOMB and the JEB on data protection issues; including assurances on compliance through periodic internal audit activity
  • consulting with the Ministry of Justice on data protection issues, and particularly being the first point of contact for the Judicial Office with the MOJ DPO;
  • consulting, as necessary, with the ICO on data protection issues;
  • supporting the Judicial Data Protection Panel to carry out its responsibilities; and
  • providing support and guidance to the Judicial Office and the Judicial Data Protection Panel in respect of data subject rights.

In addition to the responsibilities described above, the Data Privacy Officer will take responsibility for the development and delivery of an information strategy for the Judicial Office working closely with internal stakeholders to ensure it meets the needs of the Judicial Office and interfaces with Departmental policies on the use of digital and technology to deliver effective business solutions.

It is likely that the DATA PRIVACY OFFICER will require some support to be able to fully embed and deliver all of these responsibilities. Further thought is being given to the level of those resources and is likely to be ifnromed by current work underway to assess the full range of activity needed to secure judicial compliance with the GDPR

The skills and expertise required for this role are similar to those required for the Data Protection Officer role defined by the GDPR. The ideal candidate will have experience of working in a data protection role in government and will be knowledgeable about the changes that GDPR is bringing and able to use that knowledge in a practical way to help the Judicial Office and the judiciary become fully compliant with the new requirements.
